In the Ford Service guide that came with my Ford Focus 1.8 petrol it says that the timing belt renewal interval is 100 000 miles or 10 years. Does this mean that when this is reached the garage replaces just the belt or is it their responsibility to renew the tensioner and the idler pulley as well? If these should be renewed when the belt is, why doesn't ford mention them in the service guide booklet?

A Ford dealer should as standard renew the timing belt and idler pulley as part of a kit, unless you ask otherwise.

I imagine it has a lot to do with what they see upon inspection.

The majority of the time, the belt would be replaced at your expense and if there were any evident problems with the tensioner or pulley then the mechanic would tell you and advise you on a course of action. These parts, however, don't necessarily require any incremental maintenence, and so are not mentioned in the service section of your manual.

I'd ask the mechanic doing the work to take a look at it, though, as most mechanics will do bare minimum work to get you out the door.

Hope this helps!

You make a good point and the answer is the common customer does not know that they are part of that system. Most dealers replace them as part of the service and will often sell a water pump along with the replacement belt. They don't mention that eather but since your in there and the pumps are only designed for 100 to 120K you might as well do it. However it would be best to make sure that the dealer does replace them when they do the timing belt. Sometimes they may not even worry about it and just go with the old stuff. Hoping it will make it another 100K. Stupied dealers, you would think they would want to keep customers. I guess thats what happens when you have more money then you know what to do with.

The tensioner should be checked when replacing the belt and replaced if suspect.

Ford also issue Technical Service Bulletins on a regular basis. these address any concerns that arise.

You need to check that they have not issued one on this model.

In some cases they supply the belt and tensioner as a kit where Ford have advised that it be done.

Have you got a grudge or gripe against Ford - coz you keep asking the same question over and over again! WHY?

If you ain't happy with the work they've done - take it back to them - FOR THE LAST TIME - they will not neccesarily replace something that doesn't need replacing - at the risk of sounding rude - what part of that don't you understand.
