It is probably due to your dogs anal glands. When the glands become too full they can become impacted and even possibly burst. When this occurs your pet loses the natural lubrication provided by the glands and therefore can not use the bathroom like he normally would. If you see him scooting him butt across the floor it is a key sign of gland problems. But do not dismiss this advice if you havent seen him scooting!! Some dogs just do not know how to express their glands themselves and have to have a qualified professional do it every few weeks for them.

I recommend you take your dog to a local groomer or a petsmart or petco- they will be able to check the glands for you and express the anal glands externally if needed. They will also let you know if they feel impacted or were unable to express and then u will be advised to take your pet to a vet as soon as possible. I suggest AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!! A groomer will just charge you 5-10 dollars to do it for you but if you wait until they are too full a vet will charge you an arm and a leg!!!

Also have you changed your dogs diet recently or are you feeding him a grocery store dog food??? If so check the ingredients if it is mainly corn filled it can constipate your pet.

And lastly, either have a vet check him for worms or buy an over the counter dewormer from a pet store and give it to him. If your pet has worms they could be the reason why it appears difficult to use the bathroom.

hope this helps!

dogs usually start to sniff the ground and walk in sort of circles while sniffing, trying to find the best place to poop. Try taking your dog for long walks, somewhere where there is a lot of dog scent, and somewhere where also he can walk undisturbed by other dogs, humans and other factors, so he can forget about everything else and just do what dogs normally do - pee and poo. It might take a while for him to poo but try to be patient and if you take him for long enough, surely he will do it outside! If you are just taking him out in the garden, that's not enough, he needs his daily walks, try to go for a decent 3 walks a day. Exercise speeds up metabolism, so it should get his bowels moving outside.

We don't know!

But a vet would!

It's most likely to be a dietary problem, although if he has always been on the same food and never used to have a problem this is unlikely. Perhaps change the food to something with a higher fibre content, this makes pooing easier!

Is the poo normal when it comes out? Normal colour, not too squishy or dry? No blood I hope?!

Try a change of diet, but otherwise have him checked by a vet. Constipation can lead to, or be a symptom of, something serious. At least phone your vet and ask this question.

It could be intolerance to his feed, especially if he is becoming senior..
If you are already feeding a quality kibble, add a little plain canned pumpkin to his food. It is good for him, and will move things right along..

Recommended amount,:about 1 to 2 tsp. a day for dogs under 15 lbs, 1 to 2 tbs. per day for dogs between 15 and 35 pounds and 2 to 5 tbs. per day for larger dogs. Since too much could make the opposite problem , it's best to start with smaller amounts, see how that goes and then increase this remedy accordingly

Be super careful about adding any extra fat to his food, as fats can cause a pancreatic episode.

I know it's frowned upon to answer a question with a question, but ... Why haven't you taken your dog to the vet yet, to rule out that his trouble pooping isn't caused by a medical condition that might make it difficult or painful to go?

Does he have a big matt of hair over his anus? Better check, more common then people would believe. Otherwise make sure he's getting plenty of water and add some vegetable oil or meat fat to his diet. A good check-up would be a great idea.

uhm are you mixing up his food w/wet food? If your just giving him dry food he's going to struggle... If you dont want to give your dog wet food try giving his half of a banana it will help him go poo better.... Or for treats give him banana chips...
