accidents happen, you can't help that. just apologize and offer to give them compensation for it.
unless you broke it on purpose. then they have good reason to be mad at you.

Be prepared to be able to take them being upset as some people do get upset over things like that. Not that material items really matter all that much but to some people they do.
Perhaps you can offer to buy them something they want to replace that? Maybe that could help?
Tell them you are really sorry and that you feel badly about it and that you are willing to replace it with something else. Tell them that your friendship means a lot more to you and that you would hate to lose them over an expensive designer art plate.
I can't say how they will react but it's always worth a try?

My response would depend on how I broke it
was it hanging on the wall (or plate stand or whatever) and fell off when I closed the door? Then I'd say something like "Sorry -- gosh that wasn't on a very strong nail"
was it hanging on the wall and I took it down to look at it and was startled by their pit bull humping my leg? I'd yell at the dog and say "look what you did!"
was it hanging on the wall and the owner took it down and insisted you look at it and hold it even though you were reluctant? I'd say sorry and gently remind them I was wary of holding it in the first place.
was it hanging in the wall and did you demand they take it down so you could see it more closely or did you just take it down? Then apologize and offer to pay for its repair or replacement; check on EBay for similar items and offer to pay for one they like. They should refuse if the breakage was an accident. If they do refuse, send them a sorry note and a nice big bunch of flowers. Note should say something to the effect of "I know nothing can compensate for the breakage of your plate, but hopefully these flowers can bring a bit a of temporary beauty to your home."

Pay for it to be repaired or for a suitable replacement of their choice.
This happened in my home, someone's little darling broke a mirror and I asked the parents to pay for a replacement. Take responsibility for your actions (or your kids). There is no reason why your friends should pay for your mistake even if it is an accident.

Duct tape heals everything from broken bones to pipes.....
Use duct tape and hang it on a stand so that the tape wont be seen..... I swear by this stuff.... truely..... no joke!!..... glasses, my pond's plumbing..... shoes.... yep!! cure all!!
but I'd say... to keep the confusion from growing out of proportion.... tell them!!! Confess it and get it off of your chest and if you have a very good friend, they will undestand that it was nothing more than a mistake..... It's not like you went dancing Italian style and threw the plate on the floor to prove your ethnicity......
Your sister,
Ginger

Offer to pay and then do it, even if you have to borrow the whole amount. Making payments to a financial institution would be less embarrassing than paying your friend piecemeal.

All ways better to be honest. Is a plate worth a good friendship :) I'm sure they will get mad but they'll be madder if you didn't tell them and they find out later.

Try to repair it, and tell them and offer to pay for it. Could the pieces be glued together? Better than nothing!

I would definitely tell them...better still, I'd blame it on the dog. I would offer to pay the price. In fact, I'd insist.
