Okay, well, I don't really know what kind of answer you are looking for, but it seems like a pretty obvious answer to me. Why would it not hurt us when someone we love is hurtful or cold towards us? Probably because people desire and expect reciprocal compassion, passion, love, kindness, etc. When are emotions aren't reciprocated it is depressing and hurtful.
If your girlfriend is cold towards you perhaps you should reevaluate your relationship. Unless there are mitigating circumstances (i.e. a recent hardship that she is having difficulty dealing with) perhaps it's time to move on. I know personally how hard it can be to walk away from someone that you love, even when that person is being cold and hurtful to you; however, at some point you must realize that you can't keep sacrificing your feelings/emotions in order to make someone else happy, or in order to salvage a relationship. You'll just end up turnign that love into resentment.

It is hurtful because we are human, and a person's love for another is very very seldom unconditional. It hurts because we expect our beloved to love us back, and when that emotion turns cold or luke warm we get disappointed and that disappointment is what hurts us. Give your friend some time, maybe they are going through a tough period of their lives and needs to sort it out, and during this time many things may be needed to buffer the blow... relationships to friends, family and lovers....
I truly hope the "winter" blows over soon, and "Spring" is seen again for you...
p/s: For the person who said something about how God feels about humanity's rejection of his love... God doesnt love with CONDITIONS... God/Divine love is UN-conditional, He loves without expecting returns.... Humanity is NOT God's Stock Market Dow Jones investment... coz if He did LOVE us only if.... ( add a reason or condition here ).... then God's love would not be Unconditional and Divine No more... he will be human.

It hurts because she means so much to you..
But on the other hand she being cold towards you might mean you no longer mean much to her..
I don't know if I'm right about this..
I'm just speaking from experience here..
It's always better to get things clear cos if you don't recognise the problem early, it might mean more heartaches for you in future..
Sticking around with someone who thinks nothing of you..
Sometimes the truth hurts so bad people always try to deceive themselves but it's really much wiser just to get over it & get on with life..

It's a breakup Azrael.. We don't believe it when we are involved truly in Love, but it's a break. We deceive ourselves and that's a terrible mistake. From her side... She's cold as "there's something silly about the feelings of those who we ceased to love them". your mind and heart get the point, that's why it hurts.
One day you'll forget.. The sea is full of fish.. I can make her come back crying under your feet in 7 Days Azrael, Trust me! But This who leaves, who gives cold when she takes love, is not worthy.
All You need now is the very valuable gift of days......
Forgetting!

It's hurtful because what s/he thinks of you, and feels towards you, actually matters to you. When you are in love with someone, and they suddenly turn cold towards you, it's like a knife has been plunged into your heart. If it were someone you didn't care all that much about, then it wouldn't matter as much to you.
In that regard, loving someone makes you vulnerable. You are vulnerable because when you allow yourself to fall in love with someone, you are giving them the power to do what I've described above, while hoping and trusting that they won't.
Does that mean we shouldn't allow ourselves to fall completely head over heels in love? No, of course not. I've had the same thing happen to me from time to time, but I wouldn't trade a moment of being in love for anything. Like the old song goes, "Many a tear has to fall, but it's all..... in the Game".

Why? Did u get into a fight with your girlfriend?
What ever it was, just admit that you were wrong and she was right. Works every time.
Girls are like that, first they say they like you and then all of a sudden they ignore you. Trust me, i've been there. Just give it time, dont act so desperate, let her come back to you.

Because you expect them warm to you.
Why should they?
Maybe they have problem at that time,
Love is giving not taking. So if you are feeling hurt, maybe you dont love enough.
Try to understand their position, their feeling at the time they are cold.
Maybe your ego is too strong.

You are out of fellowship. There is very few things more painful then being rejected by people you love. Funny thing this question is here in Religion and Spirituality. How do you think GOD feels?

I would need a bit more information in order to come up with something more precise. But could it be that you are too dependent upon her and she feels suffocated?
