I have just moved into a rental property and the mattress is pretty soft - is there anything I can buy to make it harder? Dont just say a piece of wood please!!

You've only got two choices - a sheet of blockboard (or similar) or a different mattress. Apart from piercing the landlord's one with a lot of long metal rods poked through it to form a lattice-work I can think of nothing else to suggest ! ! !

It is not always the mattress which makes the bed soft or firm but the base. Even a soft mattress on a solid base will feel firmer than on a sprung base. You do not say what kind of base you have. If price is a factor, weight up the cost of replacing either the mattress or the base or both. You could put a board between the mattress and base but make sure it has some perforations for ventilation.

Sorry - but if the mattress is on a poorly sprung base then putting a large flat piece of wood between base and mattress is one of the simplest ideas to firm it up...

But if this does not appeal -- you could just buy another mattress with a firmer build. An old soft mattress cannot be firmed up very easily in itself -- it is probably just past its best.

You could try putting the mattress directly on the floor, before investing in that 'piece of wood' -- that should allow you to see if the mattress will feel firmer if placed on a more solid base, with no cost. If it helps then an old flat faced door is good, placed between mattress and base, if you can get one.

well, in my opinion, you could ask the landlord to change the mattress...try this option first

if not, you can go to B&Q or Homebase and buy some sort of hardboard sheets which you could put under the mattress, but they won't make the less soft, only will reduce the bouncing effect between the bed and the mattress (personal experience)

after a few weeks actually your mattress' springs will compress a little bitt and it won't be that soft, if it is the kind of mattress I am thinking about...

not much else you could do, but hope other people here have more ideas

Invest in an orthopaedic mattress - if you plan to stay there a while its worth it - or if your not there for a while then buy the orthopaedic or the firmest mattress you can buy and then buy a cheep mattress when you move. I know you don't want to hear piece of wood but you could buy some sheets of it and slip it between the mattress and the base - now one would know and it may work - especially if you have a sprung base.

Buy a new mattress. That way you can forgo the wood and get a mattress as firm as you like.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
