Go for southern end of the Gold Coast if staying on the coast (eg Burleigh, Tallebudgerra). There are some good beaches, a good non surf are around Tallebudgera and Burleigh National Park to walk in. I think there are some rock pools to explore too. The theme parks are not too far away from there (15-20 minutes comfortable drive). If they will tolerate a drive northern NSW has some nice places too. Mt Tamborine is a bit of an artsy town. O'Reilly's can be done as a day drive, but you can also spend the night too. There some very short walks including a tree top walk and a few slightly longer walks...

I'm from brisbane, which is pretty much in the middle of g.coast and sunny coast.

I MUCH MUCH prefer the sunny coast. I detest the Gold Coast. Its over crowded. But if you like night life, definitely the Gold Coast.

If you like relaxed, great beaches Take a trip to the sunny coast and around the Sunshine coast hinterlands.

July is winter in Australia, still great for the beach (less people) but if you dont like cold as someone said above, cairns would be warmer

I found the gold Coast to be seriously overcrowded and touristy. If this is ok with you then you'll love it because theres heaps of shopping great beaches and plenty of nightlife and other travellers.

The sunshine coast is less crowded and more about sceneray but also popular with ppl on holiday.

I love Airlie Beach as you can explore the Barrier Reef from there and it's quite laid back.

Have fun wherever you go!

I'd go Airlie beach. I was up there last month with my partner (both mid 20s) and we loved it and can't wait to go back. It's very social, easy for snorkelling or scuba tours and the lagoon was a great place to hang out during the day. At the Gold coast you run the risk of lots of kids where as we saw very few at Airlie beach.

Hi, both are good.
If you are over 39 years of age go to the Sunchine Coast.
You will enjoy it and you will be very welcome in Australia.
