Many of them do because of God's intervention in situations that seemed hopeless from a human point of view. The one that comes immediately to mind is that of Jesus' sufferings and subsequent death. From a human standpoint, death was the end. Nothing else could be done. But of course the outcome was that God raised him from the dead, witnessed by upwards of 500 and an entire way of life began with thousands, then millions of people following the way of Christ.

One of my favorites is the story of Barak, who valiantly fought with 10,000 men against Sisera and the Canaanites who were oppressing God's people. Despite his courage and that of his men, God gave Sisera, the army chief into the hand of a woman, Jael.
