Just because the topic came up below, and some people commented that "animals were created for us to eat them". Well, if you claim to be a religious person, trying to develop love of God, please watch this video http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=meet_your_meat and then answer - living by such standards can we really develop any love at all, leave alone love of God, which, to tell the truth, is a pretty abstract concept for most of us. If you ask me guys, knowing what's behind the closed doors of slaughter-houses and still eating meet and claiming to live righteous lives is a case of outrageous double standards. Most of us should really look inside their hearts and do some intensive soul-searching...

wefmeister - I am not a Christian, but "Thou shall not kill" is one of the main 10 commandments, why didn't you quote that?

Bill S, I am not trying to convince anyone, just amazed at the hypocrisy of some claiming to be the closest to the Lord but at the same time treating His other sons and daughters in animal bodies with unnecessary cruelty. Re "thou shall not kill" not referring to animals, well, it didn't specify "humans" either... Killing is killing, whether you're killing an animal, or a human, or a fly for that matter.

Some more quotes from the Bible: "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? Saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of goats. When ye spread forth your hands, I will hide Mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear, for your hands are full of blood." (Isaiah 1.11,15)
"It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood. (Leviticus 3.17). . . And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of strangers who sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set My face against that soul that eateth blood." (Leviticus 17.10)
"He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man." (Isaiah 66.3) - so "thou shall not kill" doesn't refer to humans only after all.

If the Bible explains that eating meat is wrong, then what is the proper thing to eat? Genesis (1.29) clearly states: "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat." This makes it quite obvious that the food for human beings is herbs, seeds, grains, and fruits.

We also find in Isaiah (7.14-15): "Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a young woman shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good." The first verse is often quoted by Christians for proof that Jesus was the savior, but the next verse shows that he will be a vegetarian to know the difference between right and wrong.

i agree with sandhaka...eating meat isnt exactly the kindest thing to do...well, i'm not vegetarian and don't really feel remorseful when i eat fried chicken and stuff...it's cos it's sorta like a habit...i'm so used to it that i don't go through any sort of emotions when i do it...i do often think about it though...and i know i can't stop eating my chicken immediately, maybe one day i will...i really admire vegetarians...they are probably the strongest and most disciplined people around because of the fact that they don't give in to the temptation of eating meat...
and for those who proudly say that animals can die for all they care and they'll kill any animal juz to eat their meat...aren't humans mammals, thus also animals? on one hand, you guys proudly proclaim you don't care if animals are cruelly killed for obtaining their meat and fire back at vegetarians and on the other hand, you lash out on cannibals in this world...after all, if humans are animals and animals are meant to be eaten, why do you lash out on those cannibals??

1) It isn't hard to make a video showing something as bad. All it takes is to find every worst case situation. I could go out and get video tapes of vegetarians going crazy and make my video say that vegetarianism is the reason. That's first
Now, let's assume everything in the video is true.
2) some of this may be true. it is something that we need to look at possibly.
3) Part of the problem is America's strong desire for everything to be cheap. We could have a lot better treatment ofanimals if people were more willing to pay more. But most aren't. And if we did, this would hurt the poor the most.
4) Vegetarianism isn't exactly the cleanest either. Insecticides and other chemicals cause problems of their own.
5) Thou shalt not kill refers to humans - murder. Not animals for food.
Addiotionally,
We are stewards of God's creation. Yes, animals are given to us. We have lordship over them and we are able to use them as sustanence. But abusing any gift of god is wrong. So we should try to make sure animals are treated as well as possible.
The video is, as others state propaganda. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't believe it's overall view. I'd like to see some neutral information. Something not so one-sided. It is obvious. Just as if the meat industry made a video showing how happy the cows were.
If you wanted to make me really consider your viewpoint, you'd give additional sources from multiple agencies. A single source isn't enough.
Also why I tend to buy my meat from a place where I know where and how it has been raised. But again, that makes it more expensive. Too bad the poor can't worry about that... I guess they're outta luck?

I too know what goes on in slaughter houses, chicken farms, live-shipped sheep, etc (and don't want to see that again, thanks).
In an ideal world, I would grow and kill my own food, at my own home. I would kill those animals who had already had a chance to reproduce (one of the great joys in life is offspring). I would eat those who could no longer contribute in some other way. I would give thanks to the animal and to God for its life.
One really good reason why vegetarianism does not support the best interests of animals, in terms of spiritual development.... We all come to this earth to get bodies. If nobody ate meat, a lot less people would be farmers, raising livestock, etc. A great many more animals would never be born, and so would not get a chance at life. If I was that cow destined for the abatoir, I would rather live and die, than not live at all.
That said, there are plenty of reasons why eating meat is not so good... for instance, the amount of methane (a greenhouse gas) produced by cows. Carnivorous animals have an even higher impact on the environment, due to the number of herbivorous animals needed to support their life (and the subsequent greenhouse gasses produced).
I DO believe that God put animals here for us to use, but we will be giving an accounting of how we treated those animals, and whether we used them wisely and humanely.
Vegetarianism is all well and good, however, only if those practicing do not become angry at those who don't. What point is there in saving the lives of animals when you are angry at human beings? The whole point of spiritual development is to develop love.
Added: Ray M - thanks for pointing out the problems of the poor. Vegetarian food can be cheaper than meat (eg lentils, chick peas, etc) but I have four kids and none of them will eat the nutritious vegetarian meals that I love.

Eating meat has nothing to do with love and peace, it's an important nutritious and delicious aliment, God Almighty created cattle for our own nutrition and I don't think you will have more mercy than him towards his creatures, if you were right God would never let any lion come near a zebra. Besides what's worst is those people who associate with God other Gods. You don't know what you are missing.

If your religion say dont eat meat, so be it.
Do you kill mosquitoes, rats, flies,? Or should we love them the same like the animals you mentioned.
Some people dont eat meat, but put their own human being in a different class of society , call them the syudra or paria. I heard they are treated worse than animals.
What about that ?
Is that right?
If you say that is right, so will the others say when they eat meat.
Whatever you think is right that is for you, let the others have their own believe and way of life.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In 10 Commandments,
Did not say dont kill animal though ;
Beside which, after Moses came Jesus ; He did not say dont kill animals either.
So, dont say something you dont know , it is funny.
You try hard to convince others not to eat meat haaa? Every body has their right to follow their own believe , let it be .
Nothing wrong eating meat for those who like meat.
Vegetarians? Sure some people get sick and weak being vegetarians, some people don't. That is true, so if your budy2 are healthy by being vegetarias, thanks God for it; but don't ask others to be the same, please.

Well, firstly ask yourself why God gave both normal teeth and canine teeth to humans? You dont find canine teeth among herbivores and straight teeth among carnivores. But in humans, you find both types. Why? Are you suggesting our human mind is more superior to our Creator's mind? There must be a reason and a purpose isn't it?

When God Himself appeared to Abraham he had no qualms about eating meat.
" The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant."
"Very well," they answered, "do as you say."
So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three seahs of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread." Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree." (Genesis 18:1-8)
If the True God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the only God who ever actually DID something in the course of human history has no problem with eating meat - why should I?
Response to your question:
"Thou shalt not kill", better rendered "Thou shalt not murder" is not referring to animals, and it is also not referring to tomato plants, which would have been an equally logical assumption.

my diet calls for lots of low fat protein
I have my share of egg whites. Tofu is too high in fat, as are nuts. Temphe (spelling?) is GROSS
so I eat turkey and chicken and fish.
Any other suggestions? If so, email me I would like to try any alternative. And I am serious. I want to stop eating meat, but need the proteins.
