Look at the mass airflow sensor, as well as your coolant temp. sensor. Goto autozone and borrow a code scanner, the new ones are able to let you watch the data coming from various sensors in a group. This the 6 banger or the 4.6L?
I first thought of carb. icing, but this should not be a problem with fuel injection.

I have seen this one many times, is the CHECK ENGINE light on? If so have the codes read. If you have the 4.0 SOHC motor then try this- Hold the throttle down just a little when it stops running, if the motor will run or start and run when you are having this problem then the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE is stuck and needs to be replaced. It is about $80.00 at the dealer labor varys place to place and not sure about the parts stores and very easy to install. It is located under the plastic motor cover that has SOHC on it.
After reading the above posts I would recommend NOT listening to the above dumb answers.
Same with the lower posts.
The IAC valve is prone to stick on your truck and I have replaced probley over 100+ of them for hard starts and dying. It is not coolent or fluid problems. This is why I get paid big bucks due to people think they know about cars and don't. Sorry, just hate to see people give dumb answers for people who need help.

You would want to replace the thermostat and put in antifreeze in it. Dont want to use water because the motor is like a stove it will make the water boil and antifreeze has special chemicals in it to keep the motor from over heating. I have a 1993 ford explorer XLT and mine wouldn't heat up so the machinic put in a thermostat now it works fine. The thermostat is cheap less than fifteen dollars and it takes an hour of labor so it should cost that much to have them replace the thermostat. Good luck

I had a 97 explorer sport and it gave me nothing but problems. The vehicle looked great but the engine was crap.
I traded it in yesterday for a cherokee. GET RID OF IT. They are notorious for a number of problems.

you might check the choke, if its fuel injected then it could be a map or maf sensor. also on some vehicles there is a throttle postition sensor, it basically holds the throttle up a bit until the engine warms. if i think of more ill add it

Summer's coming, so cast your cares. But really, I had my car worked on so much and no one could fix it, i decided to wait till it completely broke down, I figured they could start from the bottom up. When it finally completely broke down, they fixed it and that problem has never reoccured.
