If you took out a travel policy for the time & location travelled, and the policy covers personal effects, the policy should cover you to the maximum amount per. item claimable or maximum amount claimable for personal effects in total.

- e.g. upto $1200 per item for personal effects to a total of $5000.

(subject to exclusions of policy)

Usually more expensive items, such as photo equipment or jewelry, must be added onto a rider that will cost an additional premium. Otherwise, you will find that reimbursement is limited to some pre-set amount like $1,000 or $2,000, depending on your original policy. Read the fine, fine print with a magnifying glass.

Only if the policy covers items on a 'new for old' basis. If it does not, then they will just offer second hand value. I have my cameras etc. insured under my home contents policy on an 'all risks' basis - i.e. they are covered whilst out of the house to ensure that I have this new for old cover. It's just like car insurance. You won't get the new value of your car if it is written off, just the current 2nd hand value.
