If not, why not? Doesn't Jesus say that it's better to do either of those things than burn forever?

Another non Christian.
If you knew the Word you would never write this tripe.
Jesus was speaking of the Body of Christ that all Christians are a part of.
This means that if someone like you enters in among the believers and brings up a different doctrine it is our responsibility to eject them least they pollute the rest of us.
Cut it off. Pluck it out. Run it over. Step on it. and like wise.><>

2 Peter 3:3,4, For you know this first, that in the last days there will come ridiculers with their ridicule, proceeding according to their own desires and saying: "Where is this promised presence of his? Why, from the day our forefathers fell asleep in death, all things are continuing exactly as from creations beginning." Your fulfilling Bible prophesy you know. Isaiah 28:22 And now do not show yourselves scoffers, in order that your bands may not grow strong, for there is an extermination, even something decided upon, that I have heard of from the Sovereign Lord, Jehovah of armies, for all the land.

I don't really think there's any benefit to doing that. Only losses, painful one(literally).
Besides, is it really true that you have to believe in Jesus to go to heaven?
What was the case before he was born?
When Jesus was a little kid(I don't think anyone would listen to little kids)?

I'm not too confident whether or not heaven or hell exists. If it doesn't, well, that means I did that for nothing, and that would suck big time.

Fortunately, there's a better way to overcome sin.
Jesus Christ took my sin nature upon Himself, and put it to death upon the cross, so that I having died to sin might live by His resurrection life.
That's real Christianity.
It has nothing to do with rituals and laws.
You must be born again.

Jesus also says to forgive someone 490 times. You have about 489 to go from me, but don't hold your breath.
