I hunt squirrels with 22 shorts, and 177 pellet rifle shooting right 1200 FPS and I don’t have your problem.
One shot with either one usually has the squirrel dead on the ground before I make it to the tree it was in.
But I use a scope an practice a lot.
Your shot placement may not be up to par, I aim for the head or heart lung area and get a clean kill.
Very seldom does he run, but if he does he never gets 20 feet before dieing and falling to the ground.
Try hollow points on your 22 LR if that what your using.
Now the only time I ever saw a squirrel take several hits to die was when I hunted with a man that used a 410 shot gun and the squirrel was high up in the tree.
The 410 is not my first choice in shotguns for squirrels, I would use at least a 20 gauge with # 6 shot.
For that squirrels hide is tough, too light of shot gun or too light of shot will not be very affective.
I don’t use any thing under # 6 shot for shotguns.
you may be useing too light of shot for the distance you trying to shoot

I also hunt squirrel a lot and I never experienced your problem. If your using a .22 long rifle or a 12 or 20 gauge shot gun with a medium to full choke you shouldn't be having any problems considering your aim is not off. I bet that's your problem. Your aim. B/c when I shoot a squirrel either with my .22 or 12 gauge it only takes one shot and they fall right out of the tree. Most of the time though I get a shot off while their on the ground.

What kind of gun do u have? If u've got a 20 gauge, that's just sad. If u have a .22, you may need to adjust the scope if u have one or the aim may be off. And if u are using a BB gun, it takes three or four shots to kill a squirrel w/ that. Anything over a .22 will just be too big and it won't leave any of that good meat. Well, hope that helped. As for that dude up there. God put animals on this Earth so that we could hunt them and eat them and also to show us his glory. Anyways that's beside the point.

If you are using a shotgun you are too far away, if using a .22 then yes your aim is off. It doesn't take much to knock a squirrel out of a tree. One shot with a 12 ga. and you should have dinner on the table by six.

Dont let all the people saying your a bad hunter or a bad shot get to you, squirrels are tougher than you think and a one shot kill is great, but not always possible,I'm actually proud of you for having the perseverance to stand there(as funny as it sounds)and hammer out five shots to make sure you get your game.Anyone who has hunted squirrels before knows there pretty wily.As for your aim, well, maybe you just get a little excited when it comes time for that moment of truth,I know i do.

Don't pay attention to most of the idiots on here (only some people that write in this section know what the heck they're talking about, and the anit-hunters can kiss my you-know-what). I have shot hundreds of squirrels with a .22 with various bullet designs, and I HAVE had the same problem.
Shoot targets until you know that you're hitting your target. You need to be able to keep them under 1 to 1 1/4 inches at whatever range you're shooting, and only shoot a squirrel in the head. It doesn't ruin any meat, and if you hit it using the right bullets, it's dead, period.
As for ammo, use high-velocity stuff, prefferably with hollow points. Try different brands of ammo (maybe 10 or so) until you find one that shoots the best in YOUR rifle. When you shoot a squirrel, give it a minute or two (if you hit it). If it doesn't move, you either missed, or it's dead. Within one minute after having its central nervous system (brain, spinal cord) damaged, it will probably begin to twitch. It's totally dead at this point, and will probably work itself out of the tree. If not, sorry, but you're going to have to shoot it out. Again, shoot the head. That's all I can tell you.

No ur aim is not off. Just let the squril set and it will fall. It takes time for it to die. The extra shots just ruin the meat. After you shoot wait about a minuet and that will give it time to bleed. If it doesent fall out after that then shoot it again. This normally happens if you are using a .22. It doesent happen to often if you use a shotgun.

Where are you hitting them? The only consistent shot on a squirre from a 22 is in the head. Anything else might kill them eventually but no instantly.
