Depends how you say it. At face value, it's just a greeting, and we'll say g'day right back. Probably buy you a beer. :)
Add a fake Aussie accent, and a big, patronising American smirk, and we might just sock ya one in the goolies.

Mate I appreciate them giving it a shot and trying to fit in, as it shows they are trying to be part of our culture. These stupid wankers who knock yanks efforts to be aware of the fact that not many Americans leave their own country only 10% of them have passports, a lot of them are quite happy in America and they wouldn't care if the rest of the world didn't exist. Those who travel are trying to educate themselves about others cultures and they do a good job. I really enjoy a discussion with well travelled Americans. I used to be a tour guide and those who try to fit in in Australia. I like to think they are after the old adage of "when in Rome do as the Romans do"

No we don't, because most of the time it sounds really pretentious - trying to be "aussie".
It does take some time to get to know the right way to use it. It also sounds awful the way Americans tend to draw it out - as if in slow motion.
But don't give up trying, at least we get some free entertainment and a good laugh.

Yep, at least I get a big kick out of it, we aussies always take the piss out of you guys and always in jest, so, we appriciate when you do the same. Wheather your wise cracking or being respectfull, we love it either way. So, A big G'day to you and our yanky mates stateside!

it depends on weather you are trying to be a smart ass or just like the way it is said and how you say it. it is an Aussie way to say G'DAY mate. but not all Aussie say that,yes most do but not all Aussie are like croc Dundee.we do know other words such as hello, hows it hanging,how ya going, hows the clan,i do be live most yanks love our way of speaking and our accent.

Get an Aussie to teach you how to say it properly! This always gives my friends tons of entertainment value as they die laughing every time I stuff it up! Which then turns into a 30 minute charade of us all making fun of each others accents.

I think if it's in context (like saying hello to us) you'll get away with it. If You walk up to me and say "G'day luv, throwunuthershrimponthebarbie thencomewrestlesomecrocswithme" There's a good chance your shrimp will be fed to the crocs.

Trust me its not only americans ..when I lived in the Uk (as a teacher) they always wanted me to say G"day mate (and crikey) It got very tiring after a year!...ps I'm a kiwi...

I find it amusing....an Australian accent is hard to crack....English people tend to do it alright since they get Neighbors, Home and Away etc. Australian's tend to put on American accents better since we have so much American TV.....
