It's just surreal and horrific to me the direction this once glorious country has driven itself into, and the very real and urgent danger this administration poses to other nations, and ultimately, to ourselves. I feel that we are in so deep there is no turning back, and I fear for my own safety and the safety of my children. What can an individual do in the face of such absurdity? I vote. I march in protests. I've joined organizations, and I've written my senators dilligently and desperately seeking real and pronounced action against this belligerent and seemingly unstoppable government. This all seems so useless, and hopeless, and just 'waiting it out for the next tide to come along in 2008 doesn't cut it. I want accountability, I want action, I want this all to stop and I want to stop feeling guilty about being an American.
What can I DO to help this CAUSE? Do not answer me if you are going to belittle my beliefs or questions, because it will fall on deaf ears.

Listen, mar03, I am a democrat, and proud to be one. I am NOT proud to be an American right NOW. I am proud of what this country WAS and what it is capable of being, which is WHY I am so concerned for the well-being of a place I hold as high as the country in which I was born. I HAVE WRITTEN THE PRESIDENT, and he has not, and will never write me back. I have gotten letters back from senators + ex senators such as John Warner, George Allen and Jim Webb (I live in the DC area, which is why this is all so imminent). The Bush administration is so disconnected, not only from the PEOPLE, but from his own HOUSE AND SENATE. This is what scares me. By disagreeing with him, I am being patriotic as this embraces the democratic system. PATRIOTISM DOESN NOT MEAN BLINDLY FOLLOWING LEADERSHIP INTO DISASTER, WITHOUT QUESTION OR HESITATION. YES I do believe the democrats WILL do a better job, as ANYBODY could do a better 'job' than what this administration has fed us this past 6 years.

I feel GUILTY of being an American who can only wake up and share empathy one day for a terrible massacre at a university, while people in other countries, DIRECTLY DUE TO THIS COUNTRY'S ACTIONS HAVE TO SHARE IN THIS GRIEF EVERY DAY. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE EVERY DAY. I haven't been able to celebrate a holiday with my family in peace for YEARS. I cannot , without clear and unwavering GUILT EAT A FULL CHRISTMAS OR EASTER MEAL, COMFORTABLY IN MY HOME, AS MY NEIGHBOR IN HIS, with THIS BEING IGNORED BY A COUNTRY SO DISCONNECTED FROM THE HORRORS WE HAVE INFLICTED UPON OTHER NATIONS.

If you haven't recognized that the Democrats and Republicans are the same, you can't do anything about it.

There is absolutely nothing you can point to that is strictly the fault of one or the other, including our current presence in Iraq. Each has a hand in any of the things that the public blames on the other, each has had a hand in any of the things the public gives one credit for.

If you read the Constitution, you can clearly see that the intent was to make a federal government that was anything but overpowering, and yet, that's exactly what we have. Neither Republicans nor Democrats have actively sought to stop this, and both have, at various times, had sole power to do exactly that. It's quite clear that this is what both want, to your disadvantage.

How do we do something about it? Well, if you want a large government to give you free healthcare, you really can't. All you can do is vote for the one that you hope will keep their word and pay off what Alexis de Tocqueville called "bribing the people with their own money".

If you want to be free, the only thing to do is stop playing the "lesser of two evils" game. Vote Libertarian.

I really think you have done enough short of running for President yourself. On the other hand, let me ask you a question: I am assuming your a Democrat by your rhetoric above. Will they do a better job? I do believe Bill Clinton was in office during the massacre in Somalia, and the bombing of Bosnia, Is one better than the other? Go to DC, ask for an audience with your US Senator and explain to him/her your fears, have you actually written the President and asked him? In addition, why do you feel guilty about being an American, be proud of what you are and the freedoms you have that enable you to write things on a forum to ask the WORLD what you should do because you can not figure it out yourself. Just because you feel no one is listening does not mean it is not taking place or nothing is being done. What do you think it takes to bring the soldiers home? It is the signing of a bill? Do you realize the logistics in doing it. Even if we stopped fighting and pulled out now, today, it would be well over 6 months before the last soldier and pieces of equipment came home. I can tell you that is not going to happen, it never would. Keep doing what your doing, at least you feel good about it.

I( am of the opinion that the State laws of America are better than their federal laws. So let Governor of each state rule the country for a week and let the Governor have with a new adapted Constitution have their say in each law and order situation. I am sure by the end of the year there will be combination the best suited for the whole nation . Let there be a council of Governors ( at the most five to six) with a term of just one year to run the country .I assure you my friend, you will not recognize the America of say 2010.The safest place next to heaven. Disburse the accountability and power. That 's the solution .

I think that you have explained the concern of more and more Americans. The tide is turning. The news media and congress is starting to listen. There will not be an overnight answer. But the US is stronger than the powers that are trying to change it. Continue to write. Continue to speak out and we will join you. Even the conservatives of America are working to change. Look at the American Freedom Agenda. They are an avid conservative group and are reeling against the administration. The important thing that we do not want to do as a country is go to the other extreme.

I believe one of the biggest problems in all the Western world these days is not the effort to protect one's own interests, whether by war or some other means, but as what some wise person once said: When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one.

The politicians just go around desperately trying to kiss enough butts to get elected, but in the end they stand for nothing and no one.

The legal system is full of crazy judges, prosecutors and lawyers who don't think any crime, no matter how heinous, deserves any jail time. And frighteningly enough, they don't believe that it's all of our jobs to ensure that children are protected by the law instead of playing legal games with jargon and loopholes.

Politicians and business care more about cheap labor than ensuring their own country is safe.

In the end, we all get s...wed

Americans can--and are--taking our country back from Bush and his right-wing followers. The process started last November 7th (actually a bit before--remember Mark Foley?).

And that's how we'll do it--by relying on our laws, our system of government, our Constitution. OURS--not theirs--the right wing ceased to be Americans in anything but name when they abandoned that Constitution and everything it stands for.

What can YOU do? VOTE. Get out and work for candidates who are decent people-either party. Find out who your political representatives are at every level of government and use that computer e-mail to tell them what you think. In short--GET INVOLVED.

Unfortunately, we will need a to get everyone to act. The biggest problem I see is that people just don't care. We've given our country over to the fanatics and the scaremongers. We need to stop LETTING them do this. What we need is for all Americans to step up and say "this is ENOUGH". How to get them to begin, I can't say.

As for elections, I would like to see all Americans STOP voting Democrat and Republican. People say a third party can't win, so they throw their vote at the candidate that they feel would damage the nation LESS. This is a truly retarded action. If everyone TRULY voted with their consciences rather than with political parties that have already PROVEN themselves corrupt, then we might have a chance for a real promise for the future.

I feel the same and we are not alone by any means. I would suggest listing "Congres.org" in your favorites to keep up with upcoming votes in the Senate for your voice to be heard. Study up on candidates for future elections, find out where they stand on relevant issues. Check out authorsden.com and look up Peter Grasso. This will help alot, it did me. He has written a book,"In God We Betrayed" among other things.
