The day after the first time I went skiing I thought I'd never be able to move again. I'd like to prevent that from happening again.

The best way to prevent yourself from aching all over the next day is to ski properly. Without the proper technique you will overuse either your quads or your hamstring as well as your calves. When standing still you want to feel as though you are supporting yourself with your skeleton and you shouldn't feel either parts of your thigh straining. Anything that would work those muscles will help however (squats would be the best). I would recommend taking a lesson and ask specifically about your posture and balance point. I skied probably 75 out of 90 days this winter. The only time I ever felt sore the next day was after doing bumps all day or crashing in the park (so if your doing that, then there is nothing you can do, they just beat you down).

It's not about doing a stretch or exercise for one day. It's about conditioning your body for a long period of time and keeping your muscles in shape. Also, some of the pain you feel the day after skiing is because you might be using more muscle than needed while actually skiing.

I have been skiing for several years and tried many things to get around that feeling, but I can't seem to get rid of it. Some of my friends can ski for hours without hurting at all. I am convinced that I just need to keep my body in good shape

Well you could stretch properly before and after you ski to get the blood moving throughout your muscles and get oxygen to them.

i always did wall sits, pretend like you are sitting on a chair, but lean on the wall with nothing under you, work up to a couple minutes at a time, will really get the legs ready, you can also do some specific exercises like lunges and squats

I run, and bike to get in shape. It depends though what the elevation and what type of skiing you are doing. The elevation gets me the most.

Lots of lunges and squats. And go on those machines at the arcade!
