You don't have to be dead any more there are plenty of successful painters around. There are different markets in the painting world, usually the most successful artists developed a distinct style or concept that they developed over time. To sell work you have to have a good dealer that has the ear of a lot of collectors. I think there are easier ways to make money but if it's your passion don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. I recommend going and visiting a lot of galleries, see what is happening in the scene then think about how your work can fill a gap or encapsulate a feeling out there that isn't being addressed. good luck!

When I went to art school, I took a class instructed by a visiting and successful artist by the name of Susan Hauptman. Her work is essentially life size self-portraiture that is done in "drawing" media (graphite charcoal, etc.). She invests a large amount of time in each drawing (some taking up to a year to complete). I'll included a link to an image of a drawing she completed while teaching at the university I attended in the 'sources'. There is a market for all types of artwork. Painting just being the largest and most well known category. I've also noticed that this isn't your first question relating to "rich artists". If this is what you are hung up on (becoming one), you're thinking about the wrong things. 'Making a living' is surely part of it if you decide to make a career of it, but there is no sure way of becoming a "rich artist" short of having your rich friends and aquaintances buy your artwork. If there was an easy or simple answer to that question everyone would be doing it. There is no formula, and be wary of anyone who tells you there is.

First train to become a moderately good painter but more importantly be a Great Businessman and a natural performer / talker/ confidence.
"walk the walk and talk the talk".
The art world is very sexy use it best you can.
A private income is helpful if not that then an income from a related field, like design or selling art.
Other assets are good looks, youth, and know some rich art collectors. A grasp of modern philosophy certainly helps and have a partner who is capable of doing some of these tasks and can flirt the pants off potential buyers/gallery owners/curators etc.

To be successful you will need to possess what people want, better than average painting skills as well as a technique and style. You should know that in the art world being successful does not translate to becomeing rich and if that's what you are mainly looking for, your better off going into something else.

The key to success is getting intensive training in Classical drawing and painting techniques. Atelier art schools (schools inside a working artist's studio) are a great way to apprentice with a master artist. It is important to be able to trace your lineage from a well known contemporary artist back to prior masters.

If you want to become rich and successful you are not a true artist. Still you can paint rubbish (they call it "modern art") and make a lot of money like Warhol etc.

Can you name one modern oil painter who is 1) living and 2) rich? If you can, maybe you should apprentice to him or her, and find out how s/he got there.
I think it's entirely possible to earn a decent living through oil painting, but most people who become famous and rich at it during their lifetimes find it's a combination of basic talent and exceptional luck.
If you want to be rich, there are easier ways to do it. But art is really important -- I'd say keep your day job, but follow your dream during your free time.
