I would like to start up biking again (haven't done so since my teens) mostly just for some exercise. I plan to use it mostly on the dirt roads near my house, some on pavement to get there, and maybe some trails once I get into it. I doubt I will be doing any real rough type terrain. There are very few bike shops around here and the one I stopped at recently had nothing under $500, so I may be stuck with getting one from like Target. I hope to only spend around $300 or is this just not possible.

There are certainly mountain bikes at bikes shops within your price range. Both Trek and Specialized have bikes that begin at around 269. The 820 is Trek's entry level. Try to stay away from Target at all costs. The bikes are on lower quality and are assembled by stock room staff. You will save money in the long run by buying a professionally assembled bike.

I think you should find some good 300 bucks mountain hardtails (bikes with only front suspension).

If the bike shop you stopped at only had 500 and up bikes, try the others. I think you will get a better bike at them than Target or similar.

Trek makes some very good hardtails, as well as GT, Specialized, Giant, and others.

here's an idea....
find out what name brands the local shops carry. then go to the websites of those brands. Do your research so when you go into the shop you will know what model you are most interested in ( with price in mind) A good bike shop will order one for you,. and yes you can get a mtb for less than 500..
have fun
Happy Trails!
ps.. life is too short for target bikes lol

Hi there !

I brought a Kona 5 years ago for about £500 - it has been to hell and back - rough terrain through the woods - Me and it have been hit by a car and the car came off worse. Best of all its as light as a feather.

You can get a Trek 3900 for about 450 or a 4300 for abot $500, Treks are excellent bikes and incredibly reliable and dont break often, that is what I would go with
