Stay safe, there is a high probability that you will go if the war continues to go on and on.

First and foremost, the all branches of the military are training to go to war. Even if we aren't fighting a war. So asking about MOSs that won't send you to war is like asking if you still have to go to boot camp.
As far as going to war within your first year, two things will come into play here. First, depending on what your MOS is, it might take you a lot of time to actually get all of your training and get to your unit. It might be a year or better before you reach 'the real' Marine Corps. Second, depending on what happens, we may not be at war by the time you do all of your schooling. So you may get lucky. But, keep in mind that Marines aren't just in Iraq right now. There are Marines in Afghanistan too. While that isn't an offical war, it is still a war zone.
If you are afraid of putting your life on the line, you need to reconsider what you are doing. You need to realize that being a Marine means being trained to fight - regardless of your MOS. Think about this.
Every Marine a Rifleman.
Get out now if you don't think you can take the heat.

You're probably going to be infantry. So not only will you be going to Iraq, you will probably be going for ten months, be home for ten months, and then go again. The firs year you'll probably do a "float" and be in Iraq 3 months. Then an few months later go again for a full tour. You will probably be lucky if you see the base in Iraq once a month when you are there. My husband went back only for casualities, which was a total stay of 4 hours... and other then that he was back 3 times for two days each.
Hate to say it, but you will not be like some of the Army jobs and staying inside the wire. If you werent prepared to fight like the best, you shouldnt have joined the best. ALL MOSs go to war at some point.

FYI, they are short enough in Iraq at this time. They have extended most of the Army there to 15 month tours instead of the standard 12 months.
It is highly possible that you could go to Iraq. I believe they have to fully train you and will try NOT to send you your first year in. However, things change quite a lot with the military. The fact that you are an only son is a moot point as you have volunteered to join the military. As far as your MOS, I'm not sure what they need the most at this time. My son's MOS is gunner/transport. He is also airborne.
Good Luck.

I respect your choice.
But i will be blunt with you. From what i know there is somewhat of a shortage of men out there. The Army is using some airforce people for help. and thats the army. So chances of you being deployed to iraq are pretty high. DO NOT always believe what your recruiter says, they are just trying to meet their enlistee deadline.
I dont think you get sent to war on your first year, you have bootcamp, and then your training and all that is almost a year.
i wish you the best.

Someone more familiar with the Marines than I can give you a better answer, however, I suspect that you may do more than 1 tour in Iraq!
The one thing I learned in 8 years active and a year in Vietnam is that a pre-requisite for retirement is being alive, although your chances are much better than mine were in 1966-67! I doubt if being an only child will get you out of combat! Perhaps if you lost several members of your family already you might!
I think it is sad that people have to join the service to get a college education. That is a bitter pill!
If I had to do it over again, I would go to college and by-pass the Army! Especially in this war that has nothing to do with our freedom, that we have left, and everything to do with oil!

Why in the heck didn't you discuss this with your recruiter BEFORE you signed? If you're needed, then you're going to go. Simple as that. If you only joined to go to college, then do the country a favor and tell your recruiter you do not want to become a Marine. Get a student loan like millions of others and pay your own way. Marines are proud to serve their country even though they know they can be called to war at any time. You do not deserve to be a marine.

being an only child has not a darn thing to do about it...(only if there was a draft and your weren't in the military) there is always a posability... my step brother was just sent back (about a 2 weeks after his daughter was born) this is going on him being there for his 4th year term over there... you shouldn't have signed up just for college purposes the gloat that stuff... Your military standards are always first your education is always second to them... Yes you will get good schooling but crappy pay and possibly time over seas if you were looking for a military route that won't send you over there you should have joined the Navy... You could go but you wouldn't be on land.... ( my step brother was injured , came home and recovered and then got sent back... so happy trails)

Your base score on the ASVAB means diddly. It is your line scores (the CL, MM and GT) that hold the keys to the job you get. As far as going is concerned, it is very likely. The Commandant (the head of the Marine Corps) has recently stated that if you have not gone, then you will. Not all jobs are dangerous, and don't listen to all of the people who say you will be infantry, that is not necessarily true.

If your unit goes, you'll go. Doesnt matter if you are on only child. Defending our countries beliefs are what you are signing your name on the line for. If you are only doing it for college, you will never make it thru bootcamp, wrong mentallity. Besides, if you really just want it for the college benefit, you need to find another way to go. Don't put your fellow marines at risk. If you are not mentally ready to go to war, get out now while you still can.
