This question might not appealing to some, but it kept me wondering. My friend and I were talking and he said that masturabtion is a sin unless you ejaculate? Is that true? Can you "touch your self", not ejaculate, and still have a clean slate? He said it isnt because in the end your not really pleasing yourself, or causing lust.

If you lust after another person you commit adultery with them in your heart already. You don't even have to masturbate to do this. When you start lusting after people like that it begins to warp your outlook on life, that person and the opposite sex, thus loosing your clean state of mind.

Why people cause themselves so much unneeded stress I will never know.

It only became such a horrible 'sin' in America in the 1800's, before then people didn't really care. It happened when they were trying to clean up prostitution and in keeping with religion throughout history, everyone overreacted making all forms of sex outside the institution of marriage 'sinful'

I've seen no part of Scripture describing it as a sin.

Where it can be sinful is; what is going on in your mind during your "session".
Do you have lust for another man's woman, or a woman's man?
Do you lust for a sexual relationship outside your marriage? or even sex before marriage? These examples are undoubtedly sinful!

But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your RIGHT HAND causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Now. I do suspect you already know this verse. And I did capitalize the right hand part. I did not originally intend to, but when I saw those words, I thought, dang, thats pretty funny. Anyways...

Don't get caught up in the technicalities or the legality of what is a sin. Think about the principle. Why would you be touching yourself? To clean yourself? Or to see how close you can get to sin without actually sinning? If there is a line in which you believe crossing it would be a sin, then why in the world would you flirt with that line? Do you really think that almost reaching the point of ejaculation is not pleasing yourself? Or that entire time you are not lusting? I am not trying to tell you what is a sin and what isn't. But what I am saying is to follow Paul's advice an avoid even the appearance of evil. Don't try and see how close you can come to something wrong without actually doing it. Here's an example of what I mean.

My friend once told me that he had had sex with his girlfriend. But, he insisted, he was still a virgin since he had been wearing a condom and his skin had not touched her skin. Ridiculous right? But that is what happens when people try to rationalize sin. There is nothing rational about it. I am afraid that is what would be happening if you or your friend tried to do as you described. Stay as FAR away from sin as possible. Don't tease yourself with that "line". I will leave you with a very good verse.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

You are still commiting the sin of Lust. You are pleasuring yourself (though not completing the act), but you are completing the Sin by thinking about the person in that way and then performing some type of action in reaction to that Lust.

Masturbation isn't gross - it's a natural thing. I don't believe in sin, but nonetheless masturbation isn't negative in any way unless it becomes an obsessive act.
