I have three dogs (one is my moms dog) but one is so old he won't be around too much longer (Im so sad!) Anyway, my other dog Lexi loves him to pieces! When he passes I think she needs another companion because she is fairly young and the other dog in the home does not like her. So I need help! Should I get my dog from the kill shelter to save a life OR get one from the no kill sanctuary to open up room for other dogs...I really need help with this decision. I want to decide so that when the time comes I won't be even more stressed from the passing of my old guy. I am leaning towars the kill shelter dogs but I need some suggestions....thanks so much. Both of my dogs were either to be euthanized or were found wild on the streets!

I would definitely go to the kill shelter first, because the no kill shelter animals are not in danger. I would think it is likely that you will find something, if not on the first trip, then on another, that will suit you.

I think it is wonderful that you are going to save the life of an animal who needs a new home. I would suggest that if your shelter has a " meet and greet" room where you can take your current dog to see if they will get along with a new one, that you take Lexi with you to help select her new companion. I know it will be tough on you when your older dog dies, but remember, he will be waiting at the Rainbow bridge.

I would go to a no kill shelter. In the end it still saves a dogs life, just a different one. I got my dog, Sam, from a no kill shelter had her for two years and went back to the same shelter for a playmate. I found a great dog, Australian sheepdog, but after a few days, Sam never took to him. So I returned him, didn't feel bad about it knowing he would find a great home, and went back a few days later and found Molly a 2 year old Brittany. For me, I made a better decision without worrying that my choice could save or virtually condemn a dog. I also like adopting dogs not puppies, they are house broken and trained much quicker and have a harder time getting adopted. All said you are doing a great thing, I wish more people would fix their animals and consider saving a dogs life, rather than supporting irresponisble owners or puppy mills.

Either way you are saving a life. However if I had to choose one, I would take from the kill shelter.

I would also suggest that you get the dog before the other one passes so they have time to forge a bond before your other dog passes. Bringing in a new dog after a stressful event just adds to the stress.

Well, bless you for considering adoption. I would go to the kill shelter first, and see if there is a dog there that you could bond with, and if not go to the dog sanctuary. The dogs in the kill shelter are in dire need of a home or they will lose their life. So go for the kill shelter first. I adopted a wonderful Lhasa Apso from the kill shelter, and she is now my little girl, and I love her dearly. I am sorry your doggie is getting old, and it will be hard to let go, but I am so glad you are going to adopt. Either place that you decide to go, you will find a wonderful new friend!

Personally, I would go ahead and get a baby from the one that is on Death Row and save a life. Chances are, there are some perfectly good dogs sitting on death row with nothing but a gas chamber or a needle full of poison to look forward to. There are even some beautiful puppies that are on death Row, and it is so not fair! Try to find a dog that is fairly young, and make sure it is healthy! A young dog adapts easier, and an older dog will find it easier to adapt to. An older dog will probably be already set in his ways and not willing to change. Good Luck!

I'm with those who say that the most important thing is to find the dog who is the right fit with you and your other dogs. The last thing you want is for your adoptee to end up back at either shelter because it didn't work out. I lean toward the rescue groups myself because the dogs are often in foster homes and out of the traumatic "holding pen" environment, and the foster-ers can give a good idea of what the dog is really like personality-wise, and how well they would fit in with your household. Good luck!

I would go to the kill shelter. Running a rescue, we tend to try to save the ones with no time left. One of my Bloodhounds was rescued on the Fourth of July weekend. If I didn't get her, she would have been euthanized. Her name is Liberty. The no-kills shelter dogs are generally safe. We take them in when we have room. Bless you for saving the life of a dog.

I know you're a kind person that loves dogs and you'll know what to do. Just in case you need suggestions I think you should adopt a dog. Make another dog happy! Please always remember that we humans are the only specie in the world that can save all the other species in the world. I think you should start with this...it's very little but it's really a BIG help! =D

I don't think it is any ore or less noble to take a dog from a kill shelter vs. a no-kill shelter. The most important thing is to find a dog that is compatible with yours.... wherever that dog may be (unless it is a pet store - yuck!)

I would say go to the kill shelter first then if you dont find what you want go to the non kill.
Also you could try petfinder.com and look in there classifieds under your state or in there shelter pages
