Becase there are other gods, Gods 'hints' at this in the ten commandments. Thou shall have no other Gods before me. Even though Allah and Buddah are worshiped they are not the God of creations. As for the schisms, JEsus kind of turned the Jewish faith upside down. He preached on what God wanted and after his death Peter and Paul got together to come up with a Christian religion that incorporated the old ways of Judism and the new ways of Christianity.
That worked for a while until Martin Luther came along with his edict and caused the Great Schism. Some stayed some left. It forced the Catholic church into reformation but the damage was done...Catholics and Lutherans/Protestants. Catholics clung true to Jesus' original teachings but the Protestants decided they wanted to remove some books from the Bible, let their clergy get married, not do communion, etc....The Lutheran/Protestant just kept breaking apart into sects until you basically had several religions to fit your need.
In short...why are there so many religion? Because people want to worship God their own way and will find a group or make a group to help them do it.

Hi.. to all. And im new in this forum. May i introduce myself. My name is Sehat Tan from Jakarta, Indonesia.
Im interested to join this forum and may I contribute to answer and disscuss some issues.
To Redd,
Answering your question, If there is one true God?
Are you pretty sure that there is one true God? And my belief is I do. The one true God is not reflected by many different religions that people believe.
And my point is the one true God that created both man and woman, also inherit His image in us. Let say, how can we say this is true and the other is wrong? And this thing is beautiful and the rest are ugly. Because we have the scope of God's himself creativity, his moral quality. Not also a moral value that we have, we also a religious being, that we need to trust / to believe and put our understanding to know the un-seen world.
Then we (human being) in different cultures create our own religions and then we submit to the religion (to the God Creator-as you said). Then we think what we had believed is true and we called it religion.
That the conclusion is not because of One God that cause of many religions. But our way to understand and believe to God (that we supposed our belief is true) that made many way for
us to create many religions.

To answer this question I will only use the Bible.
1. It started in the Garden of Eden---Genesis 2:15-17 and Genesis 3:1-24
2. Because of mankind's own bad thinking, in which their way of worshiping was involved, they were destroyed by the only true God.---Genesis 6:5-12 and Genesis 7:1
3. Noah's descendant Nimrod, who was bad in the eyes of the only true God, started up badness again.---Genesis 10:8-12
4. City of Babylon the start of different languages and scattering of men to different areas of the earth, thus men spread their beliefs to different lands in their own languages.---Genesis 11:1-9
5. During time of the man Lot God showed he hadn't changed in what he expected of mankind.---Genesis 19:1-26
6. Because of not worshiping God the way God wanted Moses did not get to enter into the Promised Land.---Numbers 20:2- and Deuteronomy 34:1-12
7. The whole book of Lamentations is all about the destruction of Jerusalem, by the Babylonians, because of God's anger with His own people for not worshiping Him the way He wanted to be worshiped.
8. Jesus himself condemned the religious leaders of his day for worshiping his Father incorrectly and thus spreading their lies and traditions.---Matthew 23:1-39 amd Matthew 15:3-9
9. Jerusalem was destroyed again, by the Romans, because of God's anger with his own people. Matthew 24:1-3
10. Soon God will destroy religions, by means of the governments again, that are not worshiping Him the way He wants to be worshiped, therefore, acting like a prostitute.---John 4:23.24; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9; Revelation 17:1-18 through Revelation 18:1-24
11. Never again will mankind be allowed to worship their own way.--1 Corinthians 15:28 and Revelation 19:1-3
12. People righteous in God's eyes will live forever on a paradise earth with no sin.---Psalms 37:9-11,29 and Revelation 21:1-5

there is only one true GOD...but people have so many religions because...wait now...we first have to deal with the christian religions...even though they all are SUPPOSED to be worshipping the same GOD, they cant all agree with how to go about doing it, you see, they all interpret the bible to mean something other than the other guy...so they have to run off and start a new church. i heard about a church that got into a big fight...over wether the hymnals should have a red cover or a green cover...it couldnt be solved, so those that chose red stayed where they were and those who thought green was best went to the other end of town and started their own church. if people would just worship GOD as the KJV bible tells us that JESUS taught us to, there would only be one church...as it is, the true church isnt an organization...it is a spiritual church, made up of the remenant of GODS true children. those that HE reveals HIS secrets to. as to the rest of the world and their gods...man either doesnt want to deal with or cant handle the real GOD, so they make their own, gods that allow them to live as they please. even the jews, when faced with the real GOD, in tangible visible form right in front of them, couldnt take it, and had aaron make a idol for them to worship.

because there are religions that DON'T believe in any God OR Goddess for that matter e.g. Buddhism=it's a code of ethics and an atheistic religion...it's this common misconception that ALL religions must worship some God or the other that leads,i turn for people to think that "atheism" means "not having a religion". but no,atheism merely means not believing in any God.

It's a big world full of different people, different cultures, different languages and different histories. Religion plays a huge role in society and society has a huge influence in religion. From an academic standpoint, you could say religion is a function of society.
Or remember the Tower of Babel story in the Bible.
God made all of it, right?

I perceive it as a cultural thing. If you were to ask a person from each continent to paint their concept of the Madonna and child ( infant Jesus and the Virgin Mary) you may be surprised.
They might represent them as Asian, Black, Native people from the region, White or a blend of races.
I see it as this: as humans, we are trying to understand a very abstract concept as deity so we give this entity a human face.
This face has changed over the eons in in relation to the culture of the region and personal experience.
Maybe this is the Cosmic Joke (ironic one at that) that many religions will lead us to the one thing we all religiously long for...... love. Pure unconditional Love.

We are definitely not all worshiping the same God. Man has created false Gods or idols as the bible says, so that he can worship on his own terms. Man, not God has created these many denominations (divisions)

There are several bona-fide religions that definitely worship one God (because there can be one only!), but call Him by different names. He has thousands of names, and all of them describe His particular attributes. Different religions are there because the knowledge of God is preached by Him directly or through His empowered representatives (prophets) to people of different cultural backgrounds and different levels of understanding and spiritual qualification. If one studies the scriptures of different religions under guidance of a spiritually realized person, it is easy to see pilosophical similarities in all of them!
