I just switched from Effexor to Wellbutrin XL. Ever since I started taking Wellbutrin, I've been hearing a few things. I've heard a German couple arguing, and the man sounds very violent and angry. I just started to hear gunshots a couple of days ago. I haven't been able to tell my doctor yet; I see him in approx. 2-3 weeks.

I'm 15YO if that helps.

Is this a normal side effect or should I be concerned?

How fast were you taken off of Effexor? Effexor is HELL to go off of, and can produce some very strange side effects. It seems a bit strange that you're taking these meds at your age, because generally doctors hesitate to prescribe Wellbutrin to persons under 18.

In any case, as you may or may not know, Wellbutrin is not in the same category as Effexor at all. Effexor is an SSRI. Most anti-depressants are either SSRIs or MAOIs. Wellbutrin is neither. It is a bupropion, which has fewer negative side effects than SSRIs and MAOIs. However, it's not quite as strong as the traditional anti-depressants. Wellbutrin is also marketed as a stop-smoking aide, under the name of Zyban. Strange, eh? The thing is, doctors aren't 100% sure how bupropions work, so the hallucinations don't surprise me. I've been on Wellbutrin XL for almost two years now and it has been nothing but wonderful for me, but that's just me.

For sure see your doctor.

Stay away from Wellbutrin! Wellbutrin is dangerous in itself but is even worse when mixed with prozac. I was on 80mg of prozac and then given 150mg of Wellbutrin. The fifth day of being on Wellbutrin I had a Grand Mal Seizure. My doctor told me that taking the two together can lower your seizure threshold. I was then advised to eat more to counter act this with electrolytes. Not but two days later I had another Grand Mal Seizure that lasted 4 mins. I was taken to the ER had a head CT and everything to make sure I didn't have a tumor and they concluded it was the mixture of the two drugs that caused my seizure (surprise). I was advised by the doctor in the ER to never take Wellbutrin again because with my prozac it increased the toxicity of the two drugs causing very severe seizures. They even told me that it was good that I had this reaction early on when taking this med because there have been cases where long term users develop epilepsy even after they are taken off the drug. I am off the Wellbutrin for a week now and haven't had a seizure since but the doctors told me that that is no guarantee that I haven't developed epilepsy and that my next seizure could be days, weeks, or months from now even after being taken off the drug.

First of all, I just read on the Wellbutrin XL's website that it is approved only for adults 18 and over.

Please tell your parents about the side effects you have been having. The website for Wellbutrin XL says if you are experiencing unusual thoughts or behaviors that you need to call your doctor. Don't wait until your next appointment, call him now. From what I have read, this is not a normal side effect.

Oh My GOD! Okay so I just switched from celexa to Wellbutrin XL, and I hear children crying and singing in my room at night when I try to sleep. The thing is, that Wellbutrin does stimulate different areas of your brain to release the hormones that make you feel good, so the only thing I can think of is that it opens up your mind to more supernatural things.

You should be concerned, hallucinations are not normal and that means you are having a pretty serious side effect from the medication. I personally would stop taking the medication but perhaps you should call your doctor in the morning and ask to leave him a message with the details you just gave and ask for a call back. Your doctor would want to know right away if you are having these serious side effects.

Your doctor is just going to have to make time to see you SOON. What you're describing sounds very unpleasant, and your doctor needs to attend to it right away. Call him asap and schedule an appointment this week.

Good luck, and hang in there!
