Yes, sometimes... other times it is insects or mineral.

Cochineal insects produce a dark red colour.
A number of plants produce yellow.

Food-safe chemistry isn't really my area of study... perhaps a food technology student will hear your question. ...I just had to mention cochineal before anyone else did. :)

They grind insects to make food coloring. Someone told me about this after seeing a special on tv.
