My daughter was prescribed augmentin. She is 20 months old so she was prescribed the liquid form. When I got it, I noticed it was very thick. I gave her 4 doses (2 days worth). Starting a couple of hours after the first dose she began getting diarrhea real bad and complaining of a bellyache. A couple of hours later she began running a fever. I called the doctor and he changed her antibiotic.
I went ahead and measured what was left of the augmentin because I knew it didn't look right-I should not have given it to her in the first place. The bottle should have had 15 tsp in it. Since I had given her 4 dosages of 3/4 tsp, there should have been 12 tsp left in it. However, upon measuring it, there was only 9 tsp. That means that the pharmacist (or assistant?) did not put enough water in with the medicine. They have to add the water to the bottle. That meant that the four doses I gave her were concentrated.
Should I contact a lawyer or call Walmart?

Kitchen teaspoons hold anywhere from 3.5mL to 7mL of liquid. (5mL=1tsp)
Nausea, diarrhea, and cramping are extremely standard side effects from any antibiotic.
The big issue in my eyes is how you measured it.
Many of the liquid medications are viscous. More than likely a syrup was added to it, and they always make the medication viscous.

How were you measuring the doses....were you measuring with a kitchen measuring spoon because that is not medically accurate.
If you were accurately measuring, I would notify the doctor, but I wouldn't call a lawyer. An overdose of augmentin might cause diarrhea, but so can a normal dose of augmentin. My mother cannot take augmentin because it causes her such stomach pain and diarrhea, and she's 52 years old.
An overdose of augmentin would NOT cause fever. Augmentin is an antibiotic, and should take care of the fever.
The augmentin probably caused the diarrhea and stomach pain, we call them adverse reactions because they aren't allergies, but you still can't take the medicine.
I would guess either the augmentin wasn't killing the bacteria which is why she developed a fever, and she needed a new antibiotic that would cover that bacteria, or she has a virus which won't be helped by an antibiotic.
Good luck, it's hard dealing with a little one when they're sick and you're not sure what to do....been there, done that.....

Contact the pharmacist. Get the answer from them. You may have measured incorrectly: a tsp is equal to 5ml. and you can't use a teaspoon from the kitchen as it is not a proper measurement - the dosage may have been more concentrated purposely because of the strength of stock they had on hand. If your child has never had this medication before, you would not know if she was going to have an allergic-type reaction to it. Be sure to mention this incident to any doctor that prescribes an antibiotic for her in the future as this one obviously gives her adverse reactions. I hope the new antbiotic is working and she's feeling better!

Diarrhea is a common side effect of Augmentin. Why was she prescribed this medication, and why in the world do you think you need a lawyer??

nicely i'd think of that finally the pharmacist would desire to take felony accountability for the screw up... he would desire to have in no way replaced it without talking to the rather physician... no longer purely the nurse. And just to substantiate have the physician fax yet another reproduction of the ultimate suited drugs with the ultimate suited dosage. i will't have faith a pharmacist would have replaced the prescription without consulting the physician that wrote it straight away.
