Push ups. If you are weak (I know I am), do the ladies style pushups until you get enough strength to do the mens' pushups.

Get a couple of 5 gallon pails. Restaurants throw them away all the time. Ask if you can have a couple, with the lids.
Put water in both of them.
Pick them up, HOLD them for 1 minute. Keep your arms bent at the elbows, your knees bent, and bend over when holding them. Do once a week. Every week, add a bit more water to the pails.
This will make your upper body stronger, because by bending your joints, your muscles hold the weight, not your bones. AND your lower body stronger, too.

Push up,s, behind the head triceps, with each arm, isolated, for maximum, effect, make yourself a chin,up bar, and if you cannot do very many chin-ups to start with. Find something to stand on, that will allow you do use your legs some to help spot you, so you can do enough to feel it, arm curls with your hand weight, and soon you will find that you will begin to gain some upper body strength,, and be able to do more and lift more weight.

Do you want just one exercise? I would recommend the push-up. Push-ups are good for the chest, the shoulders and the triceps. Full range of motion is very important: all the way up and all the way down till your chest taps the ground. For complete details on all the major muscles and how to build and strengthen them, I would highly recommend THE NEW ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MODERN BODYBUILDING by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
