I'm asking the experts on Yahoo answers, me and some of guys from my gym were arguin over this i wonder what you guys think. How do you think weight training is good for a boxer, and how do you think its bad? I think weight lifting is good for a fighter as long as he dont overtrain and as long as he stops long enough prior to a fight (so his muscles aren't all tight before the fight). What lifts do you think are good and what lifts do you think are bad?

Anyone who says weightlifting is bad for boxing is fit for the stone age. Weight training is a must for boxers and other athletes in any sport for that matter.

Weight training builds up and strengthens your muscles so that they can withstand the wear and tear of your sport. Especially in a contact sport like boxing, weight training is a solid investment that ensures the fighter's longevity and toughness in the ring. As for the lifts, I would suggest only the basic exercises such as squats, bench and military presses, lat pulldowns and rows, which work the larger muscle groups, i.e. legs, chest, shoulders and back. Isolation exercises are best left to bodybuilders. For a boxer, our only concern is strength and muscular endurance. You're right, weight training should be stopped long enough before the fight. For instance, if a fighter trains for 6 weeks, weight training should be incorporated only during the first two weeks. Thereafter, he should stick to road and gym work.

Lots of fighters dont like to weightlift due to the fact that they are working the muscle to move at a slow pace, boxing is not a Mr. universe competion. If their is weigh lifting then it must be done light and explosive.

Couldnt agree more with bundini's answer..Anyone who says Boxers shouldn't lift weight's is living in the stone age...every athlete who wants to improve speed, power and strength should lift weight's...obviously not right on top of a fight...but it should be Incorporated into your regime
