if you're alone it's fine but, if you're at a table with others it's rude.

People say when you eat and read, you're more likely to keep eating after you would've had enough, and you're less likely to chew well. But that's more of a health/diet answer. When you're alone, it's fine, in company it would be rude to read rather than pay attention to the others.

It's especially bad if you are sitting with other people. Reading alone at a table in a restaurant can be very rude and disrespectful if you overstay your welcome at the table (by taking more time than you would if you were just eating). Please try to avoid both!!

In a way it is disrespectful. If you're reading a book it is, because you're taking the change of ruining the book by spilling food/drink on it, or getting gunky fingerprints on it. If it's a magazine you don't have to worry about that.

When I'm by myself I almost always have a book in hand. Better than staring at passers by and waiting for my meal to arrive. If I'm dining with someone else, I put the book away, turn off the cell phone and give them my undivided attention. That's just common courtesy...

As long as you're not with others then there isn't a problem with it. I like to read the newspaper at breakfast and nobody in my house considers it rude

It's disrespectful if you are sitting with other people. If you alone at a table, enjoying your meal and reading, then no you are not.
