1)A proper noun and all proper nouns are capitalized.

2)A religion and all religions are capitalized.

Because it is proper. Why are peoples names spell with all capital letters in the U.S. ? Which is not proper.

because its a proper noun. Like President Bush is capitalized, like Athiest is capitalized, like Jew is capitalized, like Muslim is capitalized, like Mormon is capitalized, ect,

All names of religions and their adherents are capitalized. Judaism and Jewish people (or Jews, for short), Buddhism and Buddhists, etc.

Same reason Jew, Hindu, Muslim, Taoist and Shinto are capitalized. They are all proper nouns!

It is supposed to show respect for the deity it worships, like Islam, Hinduism, et cetera. Most religions are capitalized, out of tradition.
