Not knowing how old your son is -- this is the experience of this Long Term Single Parent (whose son also participated in sports, scouting, and other activities) ...

Sometimes little boys like to be as GROSS and disgusting as possible when away from their moms -- and that is a way of asserting their 'maleness' and trying to appear to their peers as the "strongest" in the bunch. These are the little boys who will slide down concrete run-offs until they rip holes in the rear of their pants and underwear -- yet won't take them off UNTIL they know that MOMMA is coming on "Family Day"!

Then ... when the little boy starts growing their 'adolescent hair' (you know -- their hormones start rushing and they start having those little 'hormonal moments' that are horribly embarassing to them) -- they also regress and don't like to change their underwear once again -- mainly so they can avoid having to deal with (well .. you know).

At that time .. it is also something like another rite of passage -- they seem to think that somehow it makes them stronger to not change their undies.

Personally -- every night -- I (and yes, I am a female Long Term Single Parent) make sure that the son not only changed ALL his clothes, but made sure that he LEARNED how to do his OWN LAUNDRY -- so that he would NOT have to be embarassed by MOM doing it ... and not have to deal with MOM seeing the holes in the Undies (but of course, moms always know when their children need NEW undies), etc.

So take it from me -- TEACH the boy how to do his own laundry -- and yes, when he gets up in the morning -- have him put his pjs in the laundry bin (and his used undies), then after school have him change, and after the night's shower -- have him put his load in the Washer and DO IT! That solves the problem of being embarassed by the Undies for sure .. and he does not have to deal with anything else (especially in front of siblings or mom).

The only reason a boy would feel embarrassed is if his mother embarrassed him regarding stains in his underwear.
It would be equally embarrassing to have "mommy" insisting on the change of clothing routine. I don't believe dirty underwear is any right of passage into manhood. Teaching him to do his own laundry only would be good if every family did their own laundry.
I would explain that the longer you wear undies without changing them- they begin to smell. Nobody wants to smell him and his dirty drawers. when it becomes unbearable - trust me he will change them!
