I have been depressed for quite a while now, and now that I have some money I have decided to get on antidepressants. I know that it was caused by some childhood trauma, and that I can't stand living like this anymore. My body aches my mind is in a constant fog, I am negative, tired, and forgetful. I have tried but I can't simply wish this away or just deal with it. Under the circumstances I would like to do this without my parents knowledge, any advice would be greatly appreciated. (im 16)

Find a pharmacy that does not ask for prescriptions. You will need to pay in full. If you ask around, these do exist. Don't expect them to be Eckerdx or Walgreens or CVS or any of those popular ones. There are quite a few in the miami area, ask around. The biggest problem might be finding a way to pay for the medicine since it is expensive. The plus side to this is that your parents would not know. However, you can also go see your physician and tell them how you feel but that your parents would not agree that medicine is necessary. I am sure that your physician could diagnose you and make it clear that it is necessary, in which case your parents cannot really ignore the prescription. Ofentimes in the medical offices they have various depression inventory questionaires that they can give you. Answer the worst possible choices on those and make it clear that you NEED that medicine.

I find most striking is, "I would like to do this without my parents knowledge". If you are part of a family and your parents are loving and caring they should notice changes in behavior, mood, being negative, tired and your mind being always in a fog.

Are your parents so busy that they don't even know if you are coming and going.

My reasons for the questions is that I am wondering if you really are depresssed as stated, or making everything up.

First let me give you some education on the use of control substance. 1) It is a crime for any pharmacy to give you antidepressants without an Rx. 2) Even prescirbed antidepresssents have a serious danger risk related to seizures if you take them and try and just stop them.

You have to be under a medical doctors care to monitor you while he/she weans you off the medications to avoid a seizure.

These meds. are not candy, you are playing with fire. Perhaps you are very aware of this and don't really have a problem other then wanting to feel like you are floating around in space.

My advise to you being that you are a minor is to tell your parents and have them take you to see a psychiatrist for a full evaluation. (Otherwise you are playing with fire).

No psychiatrist will see you without your parents consent. Only if you are court ordered then I can tell the parents if I so desire that I don't want them in the therapy sessions in the start and perhaps later into the sessions depending on what your Dx. is.

Unfortunately, you can't buy antidepressents without a prescription. You do have the right at 16 to see a professional about your problem and be perscribed perscription medications. I just don't believe that no matter how much you have saved up you will be able to afford the process because you will need checkups on a regular basis to make sure the medication is working its desired effects and the medicines are not cheap. You can use insurance, but your parents will definately know when they get the bill. Good luck to you and by all means, don't worry about what you think your parents are going to think, just get help because they worry more about you being alive and healthy than worrying a little bit about how you could be "messed up"

You certainly can obtain anti-depressants without seeing a doctor, but I don't recommend it. Drug dealers peddle all kinds of things, and if you know the right people you'll be able to find what you want on the street.

However...you're not qualified to treat yourself with these meds. Psychopharmacologists have extensive training and experience with lots of different meds. A good doctor will be able to made an informed recommendation for you. Then if the first drug doesn't work, the doctor will have some idea about which one to try next. Doing it yourself is DANGEROUS. You won't know which drug, what dosage, etc.

I'm not sure if any clinic would treat you without your parents' consent. If I were you, I'd try going to the best hospital in your area and asking if they have a psych clinic. If so, ask if they will treat you without parental involvement. If they say no, you may just have to bit the bullet and approach your folks.

Good luck to you!

You MUST see a doctor and get a prescription for the medication. Most anti-depressants and other psycho-therapeutic drugs are controlled substances. If you illegally obtain it, it can make the condition worse or get addicted to it, in addition to being jailed if you are found in possession of them.

Besides, you want to get better. Do it under a doctor's supervision. If you don't want your parents to know (for whatever the reason), in most states, you have the rights to have ALL information withheld from your parents. Be sure to ask the doctor's office for information regarding this.

Go to a doctor. It will all be confidential. Chronic depression is what you have , and your doctor will recognize this immediately. Tell him all the symptoms. That way he'll know exactly what med to put you on. There are many different anti-depression drugs. But they work!! Within a couple weeks, your life will feel sunny and bright. Oh, happy day.

You can get St. John's Wort, which is an herbal anti-depressant, over the counter. I'm sure you probably have to be 18 though. But it's a way to get to feeling better without a doctor.

ordering drugs online can cut costs considerably. A Consumer Reports study found that savings can reach 25% or more.
Experts say, sites that offer to sell "lifestyle" drugs such as Viagra and Propecia without a visit to your doctor's office. Those sites can charge as much as cheaper the usual cost of such drugs.

Generic drugs are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have the investment costs of the developer of a new drug. New drugs are developed under patent protection. The patent protects the investment--including research, development, marketing, and promotion--by giving the company the sole right to sell the drug. As patents near expiration, other manufacturers can apply to the FDA to sell generic versions. Because those manufacturers don't have the same development costs, they can sell their product at substantial discounts. Also, once generic drugs are approved, there is greater competition, which keeps the price down. Today, almost half of all prescriptions are filled with generic drugs.
