My dog is a mini pinscher and he just turned 6 months old. I'm wondering when the best time to start training him is and if anyone has any good ideas on how to train him. Thanks!

Ok, I just got my dog a couple of weeks ago from a friend who just didn't have the time. I already housetrained him and he is doing very well at that. She didn't teach him any commands and that is what I'm having a problem with. He tries to escape every time a door is opened and won't sit to save his life.

Don't waste another minute. Training should be a game, with rewards when he follows commands. If, however, he gets at all agressive or stubborn with you, you must put him on the leash and exert control (gently) in order to assert your authority. Then go back to the game. Short sessions, a couple of times a day, preferably when he's hungry.

It's not too late to start training your dog. start with being pack leader, show your dog ur the boss and also give your dogs rules boundaries and limitations. Do not allow him the run of the house, dictate where he can or cannot go is first step. If he's a runner keep a collar with tags and a leash on him at all times in the house. If he darts out and you miss him then you can step on the leash. The tags are for when he gets lost so someone can return him to you. You have to teach manners at the door do not let him crowd the door, own the door. My sisters dog is a runner and if someone could tell me a good way to stop her from doing this I'd like to know, because my dog, who is off leash trained, will run with her.
Anyhoo. They sell books like "Dog Training for dummies" that will help you with basic commands. All commands take time and patience to teach. Positive reinforcement (treats and praise) work well along with consistency. Eventually they will learn it just takes time. Praise goes along way because dogs like to please you, if he does something right show him how pleased you are. If you are displeased ignore. Dogs want attention even negative is attention. They'll soon learn quick enough.
Take to a puppy training class at PetsMart, they offer puppy training classes for puppies 5 months and older cost is $99 but worth every penny, it's about 8 weeks long. If you learn one thing on how to train your puppy it's worth it.
Congratulations and good luck with your new best friend.

He'll sit --------just stand there with his food bowl held up high until he does. Make him work for what he wants.
He is obviously intelligent or you would not have been able to housetrain him so fast.
Everything you do with him is a training exercise. Think what you want to acomplish with him and do it in baby steps, each step built on the previous.
Check out your dog food stores. Many times they have a very reasonable basic training class. Your dog will be exposed to other dogs and learn at the same time.
Rushing out the door is the pits. Put a leash on him. When the door is opened and he tries to rush out, snatch him back with a command such as "wait".
He is young and will learn but you will have to be consistent with your commands and reward him when he responds.

The best time to start training is right now. They (dogs) learn a lot better when they are young. Just use your best judgment on training your puppy. Always use a mild stern voice when the puppy does something wrong. Then praise him or her for learning so the dog will know right from wrong. If your puppy isn't listening to your training you might want to Tap lightly on his or her nose and say NO. When he or she is disobedient. Good luck with your puppy.

You should have been training him since the day you got him. Best to take him to classes where someone can teach you how to train your dog. It's not something you can learn through the computer - you need actual hands-on experience and your dog needs the socializing.

Basic obedience training could have been begun even earlier. The facility where I work offers puppy classes for dogs up to 6 months.
That being said, after 6 months a basic obedience class should be required for all dogs (and owners) IMO.

he needs training right away. Esppecially those breeds need to be socialized very well if you want a friendly dog that doesnt try to bite everyone. Puppy schools are good for that,. Take him to pet stpre , dog parks, anywhere u can to get him out there to meet everyone. At 6 mths it is time for a neuter, u will find him more complient and easier to train once he is neutered.

OK. U SHould have started when he waas younger. these dogs are the most annoying and pesky things. they have the worst attitude and they will show it by constantly disobeying you. You have to train for at least a year for them to listen to all your commands. not saying theyr bad, theyre real lovable but they love being in your hands, and with u at all times, ofcourse that also depends on his sign. (lol, i know its weird but its also tru for his personality) hope i helped....
