I have a S&W 640 2" (DA only) with a coil main spring. The trigger breaks around 8 plus pounds - probably more like 10-12 lbs. Does anyone know how to go about taking a few pounds of this? Is there an aftermarket spring that can take care of the problem?
Thanks.

There basically two things you can do with this gun (I have one, too)
First, take to a gunsmith for an action job. This entails the gunsmith polishing and smoothing parts. This alone can take some weight off the trigger and will certainly take that draggy feeling out of the trigger.
Second, while the gunsmith has the gun, tell him you would like the weight of the trigger lessened. He can carefully cut a coil or two of the existing spring or simply order a reduced power spring from Wolf Springs.
Messing with triggers on these small, J-frame guns should be approached with caution. The internal hammer needs enough power to strike the primer sufficiently to set it off reliably. All of my Smiths have had trigger jobs and I always get the Wolf springs and keep the stock springs. That way if the gun misfires I can always reinstall the stock spring.

I went through S+W factory training in the early 1980's. They naturally frown on anyone smoothing or lightening their products main springs. I am sure their issue is liability.

Having said that, it's your gun. Just make sure the gunsmith does indeed know how to smooth without over doing it. Plus the coil spring can be replace with a different spring kit but I'll be darned if I can recall the company now that specializes in this.
