You need a receiver that is surround capable

.Hi. If you have a surround sound receiver you can connect 2 speakers for the front channels like normal stereo and the other 2 speakers for the rear channels on the receiver. This will give you a basic surround effect.
If you only have a 2 channel stereo amplifier you can still get a" pseudo' surround sound effect .If all your speakers are the same you will still get some effect but if they are different and 2 of them are louder than the other 2 at a given volume, use the loudest for the front and the quieter ones for the rear.
What you have to do is connect the rear speakers out of phase (reverse the wires to one speaker,so that the speaker cones move in opposite directions. This will add depth to the sound behind you when mixed with the normal front sound. Also you can experiment with the angle of the rear speakers to get a more spacious sound. One other thing i nearly forgot was when you connect 4 speakers to the amp, the speaker resistance is halved so if both sets of speakers are 8 ohms the amp sees only 4 ohms resistance. Just make sure your amp. can work with a 4 ohm resistance or whatever half the speakers are rated (16ohm becomes 8 ohms.8 ohms becomes 4 ohms. 4 ohms becomes 2 ohms).
Hope this will help
Cheers.

You can put the 4 speakers be equally around you but that just makes the sound seem like it is in the middle of your head.

True surround sound breaks the signal into different channels so when it is played , different channels are played on different speakers at different intensities.
This allows a violin to seem to play in front and to the left, a clarinet in front to the right , something else behind you , all at the same time...or a jet plane moving acrross the room from one side to another.

Actually, with two stereo amps and the proper speaker placement you can create a enhanced stereo imaged front rear simulation. You use 1 amp Left channel front Left, Right Channel Left Rear, 2nd Amp Left channel Right Front, Right Channel Right Rear. Then place the speakers in a rectangular position long wise from your Display, you may have to adjust them and play with the balance of both amps to create the perfect sweet spot! You will need to purchase some composite audio RCA y adapters to split the stereo signal into 2 stereo signals for each amp input, and your TV needs a stereo output.

Here's a quick (mostly pictures and few words) look at what all those speakers in a surround set up are for...(and where they came from)...It'll help you place your speakers, too...Click right here: http://www.avtruths.com/history.html
