When we die our spirits (and perhaps our souls) go back to God. So our spirits/souls are present with the Lord, but absent from the body. The body in buried in the earth, or perhaps cremated.

However, when resurrection time comes, God will reunited spirit/soul with the body, starting with the believers, and the resurrected, reunified, glorified bodies of believers will rise first.

(And yes, I believe that God, who made the first human being out of dust, can resurrect a cremated body as well as a buried and decomposed body.)

2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. (KJV)
2 Corinthians 5:1-2 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
---------------
If you read that chapter from the beginning the answer is obvious! This fleshly, physical body is compared to a tent. This tent Paul says shall be dissolved so as to be dressed in the new heavenly body, spirit body.

Once, the Born Again chosen by God -- not personal choice -- dies, he indeed becomes absent from this physical tent. Of course, many such Chosen ones had to await the resurrection in Sheol, the grave for a great many centuries -- sleeping in death.

The desire of God's Chosen Ones is to be absent from this physical world and go to their promised reality in heaven. They long to become absent from this flesh and to clothe themselves with the new spirit body.
-----------
Do realize that these Chosen ones of God are few in number, and that most Christians willingly or not shall inherit the earth!

Matt 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.(KJV)

The spirit is with Christ but the body lies in the grave until Death and Hades give them up for judgment.

what it means is that jesus died then he went to heaven so that when we die we will be asleep till we are "awoken" by god in a paridise earth.
