because the media and government portrays Muslims only in an extreme way.
either extremes are bad, because one of the important aspects about Islam is moderation and balance.
So to answer your question,
it is because people are somewhat brainwashed into believing that all Muslims must be terrorists, or that they beat their wives or the women are oppressed simply because they see the political, extreme and unbalanced situations.
And these situations in the Arabian area are like i said very political and should not be a scapegoat for people to say that this is where the world's problems lie today.
because there are pros and cons in every society, and you should always take the pros and leave the cons.

Just like most other religions, people have different understandings of the religious scripture(s) involved with that faith system. Look at Christianity. It is the majority religion in Europe and the US but it is still debated both by those who believe and those who do not. The same is true for Islam. Look at the violence for centuries between Shia and Sunnis.

With this said, a person will always find more misunderstanding, though, with those who are unbelievers of that faith. Much of it comes from ignorance, the media, or unintelligent people talking like they have a brain.

The problem with the media in general, though, is that they give enough of the truth to be seen as accurate but twist the truth until it is wrong. Add to that, the political correctness of the day trying to present Islam in a way that it isn't.

It's amazing how your question addresses the fact that there are so many misconceptions about Islam, and it's literally proven by nearly every response here. You need to stop listening to what haters say about Islam and actually see what Muslims say about Islam (and I'm not talking about the puny fraction of a percent that are lunatics doing things that literally take them out of Islam) It's sad to see all the misinformation in these responses. Don't buy a word of it, and use it as proof that there is so much bigotry and ignorance surrounding people's understanding of Islam, literally the 2nd largest religion in the word, and it's just a matter of fact that it will be the largest. If you want to the truth, look at what Anna and Islam wrote.

Islam is not just a misunderstood religion, the newcons wanted it to be misunderstood.
It took more than 30 years for the world to know that Lockerbie bombing was not carried out in the name of Allah, but in the name of C.I.A.
And I hope it will not take another 30 years to find out the truth about those Arabs, who could not even walk their camels straight, blow down 3 towers with 2 planes.
Now, Bush and Blair wanted you to understand the reason for invading Iraq were not because of Weapon of Mass Destruction ( there was none) or Al Qaida ( the C.I.A. asset that was never there in the first place). The reason is there are vast resources of oil to prop your greenbacks.
So it's best for Islam to be misunderstood, or else how to account for the 1.5 million lives lost including woman and children in Iraq.
And how else to account for the thousand tons of illegal heroin shipment from Afghanistan supplied to U.S and the world, something the Taliban managed to wipe out during their reign.
And Islam will continue to be misunderstood as I can foresee more "Boston Bombing" type incidents along the horizon.

It's sad that Islam is misunderstood but it's only because of what we Muslims are doing. Instead of giving things that will benifit the people and the world, we are acting as destroyers; and we are doing it in the name of Islam. It's shameful that a handful of people, for their own interests, are using the name of religion. And see how our clerics are expounding the religion; they supress anyone who dares raise any question by declaring him apostate and therefore liable to be killed (not to mention that this is completely against the spirit of Islam). Islam is not a dogmatic religion but unfortunately has been made so by clerics. Don't blame others for our faults; they 'll understand our religion by the message that we'll send.

mostly because people do not want to educate themselves or to be educated where Islam is concerned. A lot of people let the bias media form their opinions for them.
It's sad so many people are so misinformed when it comes to Islam.
I can't speak for the UK but Bush is Islamphobic, that's another reason Islam is so misunderstood in America

Because even among you guys don't seemed to get along what the true message of Islam. Otherwise, there wouldn't be suicide bombers around. Some say Jihad is not war against infidels but others treat the scriptural words as it is.
