They sniff each others' noses to get the first name, their butts to find out the last name.

It's friendly behavior, a dog's version of a handshake, and helps them identify the new dog in the future.
This question gets asked at least once a day ... I'm not sure why it's so popular!

Because the dog’s smell is the strongest here.
Dogs have poor vision, but an excellent sense of smell. With their nose they can tell who you are, if you are sick, what kind of disease you have, if you have had sex recently and a whole lot of other information. This is all concentrated in our body odors and that is why dogs smell each other’s rear ends and why they like to smell the crotch of a human.

We say hello. To dogs that is strange. It's the same thing. Dogs greet my sniffing butts. By sniffing, they can reconize what age, gender, what it ate last, and also, they can reconize them if they have met each other. Dont think it's strange. Think as there "religious greeting"
