The same reason the people where you're from are such idiots. It's the population around you.

New Yorkers are like they are because they can be. We didn't come to the city to be nice, polite, ***-kissing, bumblef**ks from Nowhere, Loserville USA. Most of us came here because we wanted to be in the middle of everything, and if that means dropping the pleasantries, we're okay with that. It's eat or be eaten. We thrive on that. That's why we're here.

I agree with Beez. We all live on top of each other, and therefore have no sense of personal space. Everyone has a different accent or language, so we have poor communication skills. On the flipside, NYC is the corporate and financial "center of the universe", so we have inflated egos, even if we are humble hot dog vendors. For all of these reasons and more, we feel that we are survivalists, real tough guys (and girls). This puts a big chip on our shoulder, and a swagger in our walk. Before moving here and giving up driving, I never realized what a great driver I am. I never realized how irritating it is being constantly touched by strangers, just constantly. Or how many gross smells the human nose can decipher all at the very same time. Uggh. I am so crabby here that I give myself headaches. But then I remember how tough I am for surviving it all, and I see a firefighter in his uniform carrying a grandmother out of a 14th story window, and it's all worth it, the "a$$hole"-ness.

A few reasons come to mind. We are living on top of each other and we're paying out of the nose to do it. Our rents suck and most of us can never hope to have a house without having to commute for 8 hours a day.

Another reason is that people that have never been to the city get crazy ideas of how NYC is from TV. TV is about as crazy as it gets. Sex and The City, there is no way in the world that she could have afforded that brownstone on a writers salary. Even a really good writer. Friends...I laugh, their apartment would realistically cost about 7000 a month.

Thats why we seem the way we do.

NYC is a money jungle. You have billions if not trillions of dollars in the city ready for the taking. The strongest, the most clever, and the most determined only survive. All I could say is I'm sick of the rat race, but I need to survive so I go along with the game.

Short answer :To keep annoying suburban folks away. Bye.

Long answer: most of the really awful snotty overly entitled "New Yorkers" are freshly minted - they moved here with their attitudes in place. People actually from the area, whether the boroughs or the surrounding tri-state area are normal. Many people took sex in the city literally...and they are destroying the city. We don't like them either.

From dealing with ignorant tourists like yourself.
Who the heck are to say such things? Sure there are always people who are less than nice everywhere you go but you don't go around categorically claiming that everyone from a certain place is one type of person. Its like saying southerners are ignorant or west coasters are hippies, there is less then 2% truth to any of it. Grow up.

Native NY'ers aren't aholes. NY get its reputation from the southerners and mid-westerners who flock to the city because they think it's cool. They move to NY and have a hard time making it. They become disgrunted and frustrated and act like aholes.

Next time you are in NY and you think someone is an ahole, ask where they were born. 9 times out of 10 it will be Macon, Ga or Springield, Mo.
