Don't chew gum. So many people do it but please don't. You will get them off faster if you don't because you won't mess up your braces!
Take a pain-killer if they hurt.
Don't panic if a wire breaks! Just get a pair of nail clippers and clip the wire to where it is comfortable for your mouth. If the wire is sharp, you might want to file it down with a nail file or use orthodontic wax.
Keep your teeth clean! Braces aren't very attractive when they are dirty.

Tips
If you're geting all depressed about your braces becuse you think you're not attractive, don't worry! Plenty of people have 'em, and some find them really attractive.
Be confident when wearing them and just keep remembering that they are helping your teeth.

Warnings
If you have a retainer do NOT take them out and put them back in all the time as this can make your othodontic treatment take longer and can make the retainer loose.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Embrace your braces, and soon you'll be "metalmouth" no more!

Give it time. When you first get your braces they may not be what you expected or wanted. But after a while when your teeth start shifting you will notice how good they look.
Don't listen to others. People may not like them or may say something you might not like but just remember...who cares? If you think your braces are hot, they are! Plus, your teeth will be much straighter than theirs.
Try to get your braces in the same color that you wear the most. That way, they'll sort of be an accessory to your outfit!
Flash your braces whenever you can! Don't be embarrassed.
Smile naturally, especially in pictures. Show your teeth if your smile normally shows your teeth. It may initially seem like a good idea to hide your braces with a close-lipped smile, but forced smiles never look as pretty and sincere.

Tips
Remember that a lot of teenagers have braces!
Do what the orthodontist tells you to do or you will have them on for longer. For example, if you're supposed to wear rubber bands, then wear them as much as you possibly can. You may also be told not to eat certain things (like corn on the cob, gum, etc); listen, but you may be able to cheat a little.

Warnings
Do not chew on pencils.
Don't play with your braces a lot or they might break!
If you like to eat Hershey Kisses or other candy that is wrapped in foil, be very careful not to get any of the foil in your mouth. The saliva in your mouth combined with the metal wrapped around your teeth and the foil from the candy will cause a tiny electrical shock. This can also occur with some types of fillings. It doesn't hurt, but it is annoying.
If you have teeth that are not bright white, don't get colors that make your teeth look yellower, like light blues or yellows and oranges. Try light pink, dark green or teal instead.

Talk to your orthodontist. Treatment will depend upon the problems you have.

But typically they are placed on your teeth with a cement and are "tightened" periodically (usually once a month). Elastics are used to pull teeth back in some instances (not all).

I don't know if headgear is used any longer. Retainers are used after brace removal to make sure your teeth remain in place and most orthos recommend you use the for a very long time afterward.

Your teeth will feel "loose" for a while or tender. You won't be able to bite into hard food while wearing them so you'll need to cut up apples. Most orthos too will stop treatment if you are not following the program--brushing very often (after everytime you eat), using the elastics, and so on. Dental care is extremely important because you can get more decay and cavities while wearing braces.

Good luck! I had my teeth straightened years ago and had three kids go through it. Each time was a bit different since we all had a bit different of a problem. So do talk to your ortho to get details. They will explain it all in detail to you.

The procedure is about 1 hour, and it doesn't hurt while they are applying the braces. They give you wax for any poking wires, but they should make sure this doesnt happen. There should be pain for about 5-7 days after the procedure, and it will be hard to eat a lot of your common foods. Retainers are mainly used after removal to keep the alignment throughout your adolesence. You may need them if your teeth are very much in a bad state (crooked, badly aligned, etc). Elastics are used for teeth alignment, so you will only need them if your teeth are not aligned correctly. They only hurt when you get them first put on, it will be a bit sore. They are fine afterwards. Headgear is only if necessary and is used mainly only at night time. Removal will feel awkward and sore for a few days but will be fine after a while. Teeth whitening recommended after removal. :) Good luck. ~Nannie B

When you first get them on, it will be hard to eat with them. You'll feel like you're eating metal. It depeds on which type you're having.
Not everyone needs elastics. Sometimes you only need it for one side. They can be annoying if you're told to eat with them on. You can also swallow them so be careful about that. You might have different elasticity strengths. Tell your orthodontist if it feels too tight.
Most braces they glue onto your teeth but some they can nail it into your gums also. It's rarely done in US and UK though.
Whenevery you get it tightened, you'll feel an ache but it goes away. If you loose any of the coloured bands around the braces, it's ok. If you lose a power chain, go back to the orthodontist.
Head gear is difficult to explain since I never had it. I believe you wear it to sleep mostly.
Retainers are annoying too. When you take it out to eat, you'll need to take care not to get spit everywhere. Never forget your retainer case.
Clean your teeth really well to or you'll have horrible marks around where the braces used to be. It's where the bacteria or something has eaten away at your teeth.
When they take it off, it can be painful. Sometimes, they scape the glue off the teeth. Most people are more gentle.
Your roots migh shorten. That's a possible side affect but it's nothing too big. If you wan it, go for it.
Talk to your orthodontist for more info. They should give you a leaflet to explain everything.

I have crowding and an overbite too. Not easy, is it? Well, just two months ago, I got braces. Whats worse is, I have to get 5 teeth pulled for them, and two of them were permanent. Thats something you must be prepared for, should the need arise. Be careful, cuz once you get braces, they hurt and for the next couple of days, it'll hurt to eat anything requiring biting and chewing. Here's the basic procedure:

1st visit: The ortho will take a look at your teeth, talk with your parents, nothing special.

2nd visit: The ortho will take some molds of your teeth [not painful], some x-rays, pictures, etc.

3rd visit: The ortho will sit down with you and your parents and discuss your treatment and how long it takes. Just talking.

4th visit: Usually, if you need spacers, this is when you'll get 'em. They're little rubber bands that go between your back teeth. They don't hurt-- just feel a tad akward at first. You'll have them for 1-3 weeks. They take about 5 minutes to put in.

5th visit: Ready for the moment of truth? Well, here it is. The braces procedure is usually as follows:

~Try on different sized braces for back teeth.

~Dry front teeth with bad-tasting liquid and pull glue on teeth.

~Glue brackets on teeth.

~Harden glue with black light.

~Glue on back brackets.

~Harden glue with black light.

~Fit wire to brackets.

~Get rubber bands to attach brackets to wire [this is the fun part. If you want em to show, choose fun, exciting colors. If not, gray and nude work well. Nude is the "teeth color" so to speak].

~Recieve lecture on caring for braces!

~~~~~And return every 6-ish weeks for tightening [doesn't hurt, don't worry!]
With braces, gum is a definite NO! Say bye to gummy bears, gum, caramel, hard chocolate, anything chewy, sticky, crunchy, or hard, and be careful when biting! I already broke two brackets with gum and sandwich-biting!
Most importantly, have fun! It's not that painful, and just think about your great pearly whites after the braces are gone! Don't forget to brush and floss regularly and wear your retainer [if you need one] at night!
I POSTED THIS IN YOUR OTHER TOPICS TOO. JUST SO YOU KNOW!
By the way, headgear won't usually be needed, so don't worry about that. Everything will be explained by your ortho on your first, second, and third visits!
Prodecdure of getting them on:
Not a big deal. They but cement on and attach a wire. It may feel uncomfortable but not painful. The cement is dried with a blue light and that takes a while. I would say the whole thing takes 1-2 hours.
Procedure of getting them off:
They just pop the wire off and take the glue off. Simple. The getting the glue off can hurt just a little, it feels like biting into a cold ice cube. Nothing that bad.
Retainer:
You wear this 2 years to 5 years after braces so they do not get croked again. You usally have to wear it at night and it is painless.
Elastics:
Attach the bottom bracket to the top braket and they are not too comfortable but you get used to them. If you wear them enuf you do not need them that long. You have to take them off when eating though.
Headgear:
It is very uncomfortable to sleep in but you get used to it. I wear it and it is okay not the worst. You are supposed to wear it 10-12 hours a night. You ONLY need to wear it during night time unless your ortho says to wear it during day. Not many say to wear it during day.
The braces all together will feel painful the first week or so. Brush well so you get all the plaq off.
Only eat un-sticky food. No corn on the cob or a whole apple
I hope this helps.
Your first appt. may be to have spacers put in. They create a small space between the molars. Usually it's just a small rubber band in between a few teeth. Although some orthodontists don't do this. For me personally, this was the worst part of the whole braces experience.
Your next appt. will be to have the braces put on. This takes about 2 hours with instructions afterwards. So eat good before you go if you can. One part will be getting bands on the teeth where they put spacers, you bite on a plastic stick that pushes the metal band on your molar. They form fit the band to your tooth, and remove it and finally cement it in place. The other part takes longer, but is very easy for the patient. They use something to hold your cheeks open and a few cotton rolls and "Mr.Thirsty" to help keep things dry. They use a few liquids that they brush on your teeth and either rinse or dry off. Then finally they put the braces on, you may feel little pushes on your teeth as they are cleaning off excess glue. After all the braces are on the teeth and positioned the way they should be, a light is shined on them to harden the glue. Just like the light they use for a filling, if you've ever had one. The last part is placing a wire across the brackets, and tying the wire in place with the colored rubber bands. This is the best part cause you get to pick out your own color.
You'll see your orthodontist about every month or two for adjustments. You may get different wires, and new colored ties. They may ask you to wear rubber band elastics depending on your situation, but not everyone has to wear them. If they do ask you to wear rubber band elastics, it's important that you listen, and follow their instructions, your smile could be affected or your progress slowed down.
Headgears are usually for people who have an overbite or overjet (Buck teeth), and sometimes for underbites. Again, this is something not everyone needs, it will depend on your situation. I can also tell you in my experience, kids with headgears are usually younger and not quite teenagers. The headgear like many other things will be uncomfortable at first, but you will get used to it. Just like getting used to a haircut or a new pair of shoes....
Getting the braces off is a pretty easy ordeal. They snap right off, and then they remove the glue. Sometimes taking the glue off isn't the most pleasant thing, I think most of that is because of the noise it makes, but in the end it's well worth it to get them off.
Most people, I mean generally speaking, most people have braces for about 2 years. After they come off you have to wear a retainer for some time, until the teeth settle. Especially for younger people who are still growing, or may have wisdom teeth, it's important to continue wearing the retainer long after treatment. Usually you would wear the retainer all the time for up to a year, and then only at night. Teeth can always shift, even years and years later, so always have a retainer.
Your orthodontist and technician will tell you everything you need to know at your appt. As far as foods and everything else. My best tips are these:
~Don't listen to or do what your friends do. Chewing gum isn't okay. Stick with the foods you know are okay.
~Make sure you are cleaning your teeth well. It takes a lot of extra effort to clean around the braces. But well worth it, you don't want to have ugly white spots on your teeth, or cavities and stains. It takes time to get the hang of it, so ask your orthodontist amd assistant how your doing with brushing. Also important is flossing. Gums can get very red and puffy with braces, and especially if you aren't flossing. I know it takes some getting used to, but once you get into a routine of taking care of your teeth and braces, it's not so bad.
~Take tylenol or whatever you take for a headache for any discomfort. Usually the first week is the worst of it, and then maybe a day or two after you have an adjustment.
~Don't use whitening toothpaste or any whitening products until your braces are off.
~Wear a mouthguard if you play any contact sports.
~Don't get upset with your parents, they're paying a lot of money for you to have a nice smile. When you get older you will appreciate them letting you have braces. A lot of kids don't get braces because it's soo expensive. So count yourself lucky.
~Also don't get down on yourself for needing braces. Lots and lots of people need them, because there's just not that many people in the world that are born perfect. So realize that it's not a big deal and that the majority of your friends will probably have braces too. Don't be afraid to smile... after the braces come off you may find your smiling a lot more.
I hope this helps and good luck!
I have braces!!! They are a pain in the butt during the 1st 2 weeks. AAAA!!!! But dont worry. It's so much fun at the orthodontist's office. Flossing hurts SOOOO bad when you first start. You can ask for these little blue thingies that you thread the floss through and use that. You actually can chew gum, but only sugarfree. no bubblicious for you, my dear. About headgear... if you have to get it, im SOOOOOOOO sorry, but i dont know much about it. (My LA teacher said she had that, but she never wore it, and now her teeth are pretty screwed up if u ask me.) u dont have to wear it at school, just at home. DONT shove popcorn into your mouth!!! (i just HAD to learn that the hard way. :o) Eat soup if it hurts. dont starve yourself. Dont chew on anything ur not supposed to. make sure to keep them clean and shiny, i brush 3 times a day, sometimes 4. I HATE how when i eat white bread, it gets stuck and causes all sorts of nasty goo. it also gets lodged around the brackets and in the space between the bracket and rubberbands. i use a toothpick to dig the nastiness out, but gently, and then brush away the exess very well. for an extra sparkling smile and less chance of icky white spots after removal, swish before you brush with this listerine pre-brush whitening stuff. (Do NOT try to gargle with it. again, learned the hard way. ick.) Every time after leaving the orthodontist, i got a sore throat. please save urself and gargle VERY well EVERY time after the orthodontist. Ok. heres what they do. First, you brush rinse do all that stuff in the office. they sit you in the chair, and apply this sandy, EXTREMELY NASTY gritty crud to your teeth. they leave it on, and then have you rinse and brush again. They take this tiny little sponge thing and apply glue to your teeth once. they have you brush AGAIN and apply it for a second time. tastes like rubbing alcohol. (DONT ask.) They place on a metal bracket and put this blue light thingy on it, makes a beep noise and the y do that for all of them. then they make you brush for the GAZILLIONTH time. they cut wire, light the ends with a lighter, curl them, and put them in ur mouth. they ask u what kind of rubberbands u want, and they put them on. the bands are attatched to a little bar of rubber with the bands attatched on both sides. they take pliers and pinch the little bands off, and then twist them about the bracket. they send you off with a new toothbrush, toothpaste, blue flosser thingys, stuff like that. they tell you itll hurt really bad, so get some advil. I had to get two brackets taken off and readjusted b/c they made a mistake, had to make more room. They took pliers and popped it off surprisingly easily. then they took this little pliers thingy with brown paper in the middle. they literally sanded the glue off my tooth by squeezing and releasing the pleasure from the pliers. i hope u get it. then they reglued the other ones and again, it hurt b/c they adjusted the wires. very ouchey. I am getting my braces off b4 8th grade starts. Oh, and wait at least 3 weeks before you try to eat solid foods again. applesauce will become your new best friend. this is also quite a fun time b/c your mom will buy ice cream especially for you... lucky!!! ok hope i helped. God Bless you and good luck!
