My cat is ten years old and I noticed that some pillows that he slept on smelled terrible! But the strange thing is that he doesn't smell bad---it's just things that he sleeps on, or if he's in a room for a long time. Could he be secreting an oil of some kind? Also, he's very skinny, even though I feed him a lot. Is he okay?

Definitely get your cat to a vet asap. Cats dont have bad smells unless something is wrong. And with his weight seeming to be an issue it could well be his teeth. At his age that could be a symptom of a very serious problem or become one.

He could be secreting some oil from his anal glands and that has to be the worst smell in the world!

Since he is now a "senior" cat a vet exam and blood panel are in order to check out his overall health and to see if there is a medical reason he is losing weight. Eating a lot and losing weight is NOT a good sign.

I'm more concerned by the fact your cat is ten years old and very skinny even though he eats a lot. This is a classic sign of hyperthyroidism - very common in older cats. It requires a blood test to diagnose, and can be treated with medication. I advise you to get this checked out, it can make life quite miserable for the cat as it develops.

As for the smell - get this checked out when you go to the vet It isn't normal, bad smells come from somewhere. They don't just live in cats, which normally smell delicious! (in my opinion). Dental disease is also very common in older cats, and it does cause bad smells to follow the cat around!

I think your cat needs to go to the vet for what we call a 'senior cat check'. It's not really natural for cats to live as long as they do in domestication, which is why you do see a lot of problems and syndromes develop in them when they get older. Your vet can advise you best, but I would definitely have the cat checked so you can prepare for his senior years!

He may just be getting old. I would have his teeth checked. He may have some bad teeth that are preventing him from eating.
