Cat-lover here. 1)Calico's have a low metabolism and they just like to eat and eat so the food converts to fat.
2)Orange tabbys are not all boys. Nature dictates that there ar more males. ("Don`t fool with Mother Nature")
In my opinion, 3) Any color-Tabby-short -hair females(Spaid) are great companions. They can be both frolicky and laid-back. -S

Calico cats are females. A male calico cat is extremly rare and would be a genetic abnomality that would generally be steril.
Every orange or yellow tabby I have ever had was a tom.
I would get a kitten that needed rescuing. All you should have to do is pay for its shots. Female cats do not mark their territory with spraying the way males do but do yowl a lot when in heat. If left outside a female is not as prone to run away and never return. Male cats which have not been nuetered have a way of roaming to sooner or later never return. Female cats exposed to stray males will have kittens and lots of them. Long haired cats are beautiful but short haired cats seem to stay cleaner at times. The huge maine coon is among the most popular pedigreed cat. White cats may be deaf and color points like siamese may be cross-eyed.
If it were me I would find a domestic cat (not purebred) of the color I liked best and have it nuetered and take it for all of its shots.

1. Not all calicos are fat cats I have had a calico that isnt fat. It really just depends on the way it eats and how much activity it does.
2. Not all orange tabby cats are boys but most of them are.
3. I have Sphynxs so of course I think they are the best cats in the world. They are outgoing and of course hairless. Because they are hairless you dont have to worry about fleas or them shedding. But any cat will make a good cat. It depends on what you like if you like long haired cats maybe a persian is good for you but there are alot of shelter cats that deserve good homes. As for a male or a female I like females better because males spray and I even got my male fixed before and he still sprayed. I also think females are more carring then males.

1. No, I had a calico who was slim and petite until the end.
2. My orange tabby was a boy but my cousin has a female.
3. I'll always have a soft spot for the siamese, any color.
It doesn't really matter what breed, although Maine Coons are incredibly gentle and they enjoy playing. They get to an enormous size and can enjoy a long life.
I've had up to six cats in the house at one time all various breeds and genders. I like them all. Which ever one you choose, you'll love it too.

1) They don't all get fat. Ive seen too many skinny ones. There is no real reason for any animal to get fat - there's always a reason, and it can always be managed. If you have a fat calico cat, email me so I can help! Some breeds are more predisposed to overweight, but it can always be managed.
2) The majority of ginger cats are boys, but you do see ginger females, they're not that rare. All calicos and tortoiseshells are females however.
3) It depends what you like - personally I like black cats for their looks and personality! Burmese and Abyssinians are know for their affectionate personalities. I would just go to a shelter and pick whichever cat you bond with!

I have a calico who actually maintains a very althetic figure! =) I believe that any color pattern is subject to weight gain. Also, the allele that carrying the orange color in cats is sex-weighted. That is to say, it is passed on from females but often affects only males, much like color-blindness in human males. Although, I have seen many orange females. And as for a good kitty, many people who come into the animal rescue where I work prefer males. Their reasoning is that males tend to be more affectionate and low key. I say go to a local shelter and find which cat "speaks to you." Which one you bond with! Try www.petfinder.org to look for shelters and specialized breed rescues in your area. I have a soft-spot for white deaf cats, but that's just me! =-)

I've seen many slim calico cats, mainly in shelters.
I would think female cats can also be orange....
Girl cats are less prone to spraying to mark their territory, in general. Not sure if there are any other differences that make males or females better.
Good luck
