My daughter is 12 and has been very obsessive with her weight. She is 12 years old, 5'3 in height, and 128 pounds. What are some good ideas at this age for her to get some more physical activity but still have fun?

If she's not a sporty person, or doesn't get along with the sporty kids at school (one of my problems in high school/jr high) You can encourage her to ride her bike to place and go shopping, depending on where you live in your city. Also, after school sports at community centers are helpful. If she's not into the team thing, ask her if she wants to learn ballet, tap, jazz, bellydancing, irish dancing...taking lessons is fun and the focus isn't on weight loss, it's on learning.

Try to steer her towards acitivites that don't put unnecessary focus on losing weight, because she's too young for that.

she is pretty chunky, but that's fixable since she's still young.
swimming works VERY well
i used to get very exausted from swimming, and it can be very fun!
check around for swimming teams around your area
team sports may be the best idea since competing alone may make her even more self concious
also get her on a good diet.food has alot to do with kid's weight
pack her a healthy lunch and most of all, don't just tell her what to do, tell her why
at this age girls get dumb ideas such a starving (which from personal experence sucks) so make sure you explain the concepts of diet+exercise so that she doesn't take any risky shortcuts
use rewards for when she has made progress
good luck to both of you

Tell her that gaining weight has to do with her muscles, not fat. Don't know why many young girls believes it's from fat, because they should be informed that fat is less dense than muscles. And please, please tell her what will happen to her if she becomes too obsess (talk to her about anorexia and bulimia nervosas).

Doing the physical things she likes shouldn't be a problem, unless you'd like to teach her some exercises that are meant for specific parts of the body. Maybe even play sports with her?

have her start a sport or activity, is there anything she is interested in? also if she has not started her minstrual cycle yet, i would keep an eye out. she will most likely gain weight from that if she has not already started. and just try to get her to eat healthy. i understand that shes at that age being worried about her weight, especially as she gets older. good luck with her. but tell your daughter she is not "fat" if thats what she thinks. im the same height and about the same weight and its not "fat"

Make it fun and enjoyable. Go and play sports with your daughter. That why not only you stay healthy, but you get to have fun with your daughter and grow a stronger bondage.

This way you'll both be getting into shape without knowing it, and gaining a skill and bond. Thats like a triple bonus!!!!

Dance lessons would be great. She's be exercising without even knowing it.
Swimming, self defense classes, tennis, field hockey, soccer. All of those things are great for girls, and they are less competetive than some other sports out there.
By the way, she is far from overweight. She hasnt even finished growing yet.

Arrange healthier eating habits for her and mix togetherness in with it. For Example, after school arrange a few times a week to go to Subway for dinner. Purchase a blender and the two of you can make fresh homemade Strawberry or Bananna Smoothies. I think if the two of you diet together and make it fun, she will come out of that stage soon. Good Luck!

Furthermore, take walks and ride bikes together, go swimming, etc
