Ah, NO.

Shake a paw is the WORST PLACE.

I have told my story regarding Sophie, a sweet little Cocker Spaniel purchased at Shake a Paw of Tom's River. She endured several months of treatment for pneumonia which she acquired at the pet store. We spent about $8,000 for her treatment and thankfully, she survived. The pet store was notified,by certified mail, before they went out of business. We also sent certified mail to the Household Pet Protection insurance company that was on our contract to guarantee Vet bills up to the purchase price of the puppy or $1,000 which ever is less. We never heard back from either one of them, and when I called Shake a Paw, the store was closed.

I called the insurance company which advised me that they had no record our the contract, and they had numerous people calling regarding reimbursement. The woman told me that Shake a Paw never had money in their account to reimburse their customers as stated in the contract. She essentially said we were out of luck and would have to sue. I know that I will never recoup all of the money we spent to save Sophie's life, but shouldn't the company be held to the contract?

The economic damage was huge, as stated. We spent $8,000 to save the life of a $900 puppy. But our only alternative was to let her die. We couldn't do that and felt she deserved the chance to live. We also feel we are at least owed what the contract states.

If you want a puppy thats going to DIE, then sure go ahead.

DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM A PETSTORE! Adopt a dog from a shelter, spca, humane society or other no kill shelter. Petco and Pet Smart have rescued animals that are available for the price of a reduced spay/neuter with some shots included. Do not support puppy mills. They need to be put out of business. I am not familiar with those that you have listed but there are so many unwanted dogs and puppies. Most likely you can even find the type of puppy or young dog that you want. Look on Petfinder.com too. So many animal, so few good homes.

Pet stores by puppies from puppy mills/farms. Just google it and see what horrific things come up. They may say that they don't, but they all do. Do you want to pay $2000 for a dog full of problems, or $2000 from a reputable breeder?

When looking for a reputable breeder - don't look for the cheapest price. That will usually result in a dog that is not up to AKC standards, (don't buy UKC/CKC registered dogs, those organizations basically register anything with 4 legs, while AKC has regulations). They might have temperament problems, and health problems because the breeder has not taken the time to properly breed those negatives out, and is only in it for the money.

Responsible breeders breed only to maintain the breed, or improve the breed. Not to make a profit.

No I wouldn't go through the pet store, you could have more suffering than the joy of owning a pet. You could go through a breeder but even then you have to be careful, actually today's day and age unfortunately you have to be careful in all aspects of buying a companion pet. There is rescue there is the humane society like I mentioned before breeders there is the classified adds there are many ways to find a pet and be careful with pet find.com I heard that was not so reputable. Yes, there is also the slight chance that you can find that perfectly happy healthy pet from a pet store but it is short to nil.

I'm not aware of these pet stores, but if you really want a lovable dog, go your nearest pound. They may not have one you may like the first or second trip, but I assure you it will be worth it. Plus you will be saving a life of an adorable pet. Get some puppy pads, house break it and long walks, lots of love and it will greet you at the door as if you were a king. Good Luck.

No pet store that sells puppies reputable. All should be shut down permanently! You can easily find a reputable breeder or your next dog at your local shelter or rescue.
I suggest you check out these links which will no doubt convince you of why not to purchase a dog which comes from a puppy mill.

reduce pet population; rescue a dog from a shelter. in my experience, any animal that i've rescued has been more loyal and appreciative than an animal from a pet store or breeder. stick with the shelter and be that dog's hero. <3
