What ensign did ships of the Royal Australian Navy fly during World War 2?

Did they use the same white ensign as British ships, the current Australian version (blue Southern Cross on white), the standard Australian flag or even some earlier version?

Until 1967 RAN ships flew the British white ensign at the stern, but displayed the Australian flag at the Jackstaff while at anchor.

But from URL below:
"it was not uncommon for RAN ships to fly the Australian National flag from the masthead when in action."
That is, as an additional Battle Ensign.
