One that doesn't have wheat or rice gluten. I read an article about just how bad all the animal food was. How we are fooled into thinking how nice the dog food is when actually it is full of inferior products and then supplemented with vitamins so that they can say it provides a nutritional diet. Animal digest kinda freaks me. My brother-in-law used to eat Vienna Sausages. We used to tease him about the only thing that could be in there after they made the bologna and hot dogs would be the scraps that fell on the floor and lip and *ssholes. Then I saw cow lips for sale at the supermarket. You know what that leaves. Whatever is left after that goes into dog food. That would be hooves, horns, beaks and other wonderful meaty parts. Then there is corn. Dogs aren't supposed to eat corn. People aren't supposed to eat that much corn so why are we feeding it to dogs? The word cheap comes to mind. But now that ethanol i requires corn and the price is going up I guess they switched to Chinese glutens to pump up the protein count. No one even talks about the rat poisen anymore. They don't care what they slop over here and yet we buy it. Let's hear it for making the cheapest product possible for the least amount of $ so that our shareholders make a profit. My poor ol' rescued dog died from getting his treats-Ol' Roy Dog Biscuits. How dare these companies feed our animals this cr*p. We need to retaliate. The only thing I can think of is boycott ALL Chinese products. There are many reasons to do so and this is just but one.

Don't know which one is actually "the best", there are several good brands out today. I prefer to feed ones that don't have any grains (definitely not corn, and no rice either for my dogs).

Timberwolf Organics
Orijen
Innova and Innova EVO
Canidae
Wellness
Solid Gold
California Natural

just to name a few

A natural dog food is always better than a supermarket dog food. However, if it's a matter of economics, purina is good.
Dry food (kibble) is much better and healthier than canned. Just try to stay away from by-products and artificial stuff.
Generally, whatever the dog will eat...just encourage dry (kibble). Cheaper for you, more for your dollar, lasts longer and is better for doggie.

Some dogs require certain brands of dog food. For example I have a english mastiff, and she requires a food that contains less protein. Check with your vet and see what they recommed for your dog.

Canidae
Wellness
Solid Gold
Eagle Pack
Nature's Variety
Flint River Ranch
All are quality foods with no corn or wheat.
Oh sheesh I just checked everybody else's answers- seeing a Can-a-day pattern here are we?
If I absolutely *had* to purchase a grocery store brand I would get Maxximum Nutrition. No corn, wheat, "by-products", artificial flavor, colors or preservatives; lamb and chicken meal are the first 2 ingredients...

Strickly speaking of using whole ingredients, no byproducts, and the quality of the ingredients, Canidae. It's the brand we use at the animal rescue where I work.
