Yes. Italy, Spain, and France have an official language. One official language makes workers more productive (less translation, telephone options, etc) and it is better for the environment (less trees have to be cut down to print extra copies of documents just in case someone can't read English).

From the research I have done, I found that the United States of America does not have an "official" language, yet english is the predominant language of the U.S.A.
Many individual states have laws establishing english as the official language.
Here is a website; http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu560LTVG8lAAvb5XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTB2dnY0Nm1iBGNvbG8DZQRsA1dTMQRwb3MDMgRzZWMDc3IEdnRpZAM-/SIG=124nq38ef/EXP=1177976628/**http%3a//www.usconstitution.net/consttop_lang.html
Good luck in the debate.

No,part of the freedoms that U.S citizens pride themselves on is the freedom to speak whatever language they choose along with others such as choosing to be of a different religion and even having a different sexual preference. If we change that then aren't we going against that freedom that this country prides itself on? and who knows after having and official language and official religion might be next. This by no means supports the idea that other people should refuse to not learn english but that in itself is their own choice.Nowadays with the mainly hispanic population it is a good idea to learn spanish, but yet again so is knowing how computers run. Yet neither can be forced upon a person, they choose to learn or not learn what they wish and suffer the consequences of those choices like not getting a better job or having someone else they see as less qualified than them get a promotion. hope it helps and sorry i could give you a website but yet again i don't support fully doing someone else's homework.I'm sure your smart enough to find one on your own.

united statesa. has no valid language on the federal factor, yet English is the de facto nationwide language. which means English is the most spoken and universal language interior the U. S., yet there is not any valid language. I bear in mind listening to about a regulation they were attempting to bypass making English the valid language, yet i guess it failed.

yes.. english should be the official language of the united states. If you don't want to learn the language, then don't live here. Why should we change to allow others who are mostly here illegally to live more comfortably... so i say heck yes!!

I THINK THAT THINGS SHOULD REMAIN AS THEY ARE!WE DON'T NEED TO MAKE ENGLISH THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE BECAUSE AROUND 86% OF AMERICANS SPEAK ENGLISH AND ENGLISH ALONE.THE REST OF THEM KNOW HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH GOOD ENOUGH.THAT SHOULD DUE!MAKING ENGLISH THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE WILL ONLY SERVE A POLITICAL PURPOSE FOR CONSERVATIVES.NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE BECAUSE OF IT.BUT IT WILL BE SEEN AS RACIST AND OR NATIVIST AND THAT'S GOING TO CAUSE PROBLEMS SO LETS NOT GET THAT DEBATE STARTED TOO.EVERYBODY WHO WANTS TO MAKE SOMETHING OF THEMSELF IN THIS COUNTRY WILL LEARN ENGLISH ON THEIR OWN.USING GOVERNMENT TO FORCE PEOPLE TO DO SOMETHING THAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE.AMERICA HAS BEEN FACED WITH THIS PROBLEM BEFORE!ENGLISH HAS REMAIND THE ONE AND ONLY LANGUAGE THOUGH."IF YOU DON'T WANT TO CAUSE A BITTER DEBATE TO START THEN YOU SHOULD JUST LEAVE THINGS AS THEY ARE.""LETS NOT FORGET THAT AMERICA IS THE GRAVEYARD FOR NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGES"THE NON-ENGLISH SPEAKERS WILL LEARN ENGLISH BECAUSE THE ECONOMY IS GOING TO FORCE THEM TO.IF THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE THE AMERICAN DREAM THEN THEY'LL DO THE RIGHT THING.IF THEY DON'T DO THE RIGHT THING AND LEARN ENGLISH THEN THEY'LL BE REJECTED BY SOCIETY AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THEY WON'T BE GRANTED CITIZENSHIP.I KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO IF I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH."THEY'RE JUST TOO MENY BENEFITS OF KNOWING ENGLISH.!!!
