I am hoping to find out names and address to local, or not so local men and women that are serving out country over seas. My brother was in the Marines, and has recently been reactivated. And although he is not going over seas, I would still like to show support for those that are. Does anyone know where I can get a list of names, address, and items they may want and need??

Anything they want. I sent my heart, love, prayers, Jelly Bellies, and Girl Scout chocolate mint cookies before. If you can believe this, the chocolate on the cookies didn't even melt, when they went to Iraq, for my friend. Just my heart melted.

www.anysoldier.com or www.adoptaplatoon.org www.thanksamillion.org and www.operationdearabby.com

Those sites should be a good starting place. There really isn't anything you can't send except alcohol. They can get kicked out of the service for having that while in theather. Other than that it's mainly just common sense. Don't send chochlate in the summer, though it does fine in the winter. Don't send loud smelling soap with food (it ruins the whole box, plus most guys prefer their own brand of stuff). Don't send anything that can leak or explode. Things that are great to send is 550 (paracord) cord, books, magiznes and things to pass the time. It's fine to send a lot of one thing as it will get passed around to other soldiers. Don't send tons of chiristan material unless it's addressed specifically to a chaplian of a unit. Other than that just have fun with it. Send your local newpaper and pics of you and your hometown. Put in a self addressed enevelope (no need for a stamp, soldiers mail free), and a card, an u may get a thank u card back. But don't expect one since they stay busy. It's great sending an assortment of cards for the guys to send home to their families, especially a month before big holdiays. If you send stuff for xmas and thanksgiving, ship at least 8 weeks early. And nothing persihable, normal letters get to some places within a week a package on the other hand may take four to six weeks in some cases. Flat rate is best for heavy items, and just send normal ground, u don't benefit any by sending priority or first class. Good Luck and happy shipping.
PS if you love baking and want to send homemade stuff invest in a vaccum sealer like a food saver. They are excellent for cookies, dry cakes and breads.

A good place is www.anysoldier.com . The website offers the opportunity to find someone in any branch and get their address to ship packages. If you are looking for a penpal, this may not be for you, though. A tip would be to look at how many times the address has been requested and send to those with low numbers, as they're more inclined to not be receiving much mail.

Good luck!

Amanda-----I have relatives in Iraq------they love anything to remind them of home----------cannot saw why--------but they have an absolutely wild fondness for potted meats like those little canned vienna weinees---------and spam-------and they sure love hard rolls----our USPS has flat-rate boxes they will send you 10 boxes in your choice of two sizes----one is like a shirt box----the other box is shaped like a little chest---------you can stuff these full of anything you can get into them up to 70 pounds-for only $8.10-------this is an extremely great shipping bargain----oh and BTW-----our guys love those hard bakery rolls to go with those potted meats---------for security sake I do not advocate sending anything that is not tamper proof to anyone over there unless you know them---------all it would take would be for one case (heaven forbid) of something tainted to change the way things would get distrusted forever.-------I almost hesitated to say that for concern it might put ideas in someones head -----but they get them on their own with the help of hollwood and the media--------------good luck in your efforts and I will be reading answers so I can also find good ideas.--------And--------what about something FUN---------------...what about a YO-YO----------???? wow----something fun----I will buy a dozen YOYO's and send them....LOL
