I think it's a stupid idea. We don't even need to set up a new government in Iraq. They've been fighting for 2000 years, I don't see why we should change that. They can get over their differences on their own.

But I'm also a 15 year old guy, so the draft would greatly affect me.

A draft would not help. First of all, the public is more tolerable of the war without it. People might not like it, but everyone who is there volunteered to be there. With a draft, the general public would be outraged because people are forced to be over there fighting a war they don't support as opposed to volunteering to be there. For example, you don't see major protests and riots because of the war in Iraq now, but if a draft was instituted for it, you bet there would be a lot. No draft keeps the public quiet in politicians minds. Secondly, the military doesn't like the draft either. One thing that makes the military strong is that everyone over there fighting is willing to, they signed up for it. With a draft, the military gets people who don't even want to be there which makes them less effective fighters. And lastly, the military today is very technologically advanced. They need people who are very technologically savvy. In the past (Vietnam era for example) the draft was handy because the military just needed bodies on the front line with guns and the draft put the bodies there where they needed them. Today, however, the battlefield is so advanced, they don't just need bodies, they need people who both understand the technical equipment they use, but are willing to learn about it (and people who are drafted really don't care and won't take the time to learn).

The war in Afghanistan and Iraq has shown that a volunteer army can sustain for a short war, actually it could probably sustain for a war indefinitely if we were to use all our assets. The war in Iraq especially, is one sided because we rely far too much on our ground troops.

I would definitely support a draft, just to gives the guys in uniform some relief. Many of these guys are on a second and third rotation, and this is not reasonable. The question of how many would support the draft is moot. Naturally, all those running for office would oppose the draft, and those in office would need to go before Congress to approve this action.

Considering that a democratic Congress has already shown it's colors, yellow, it's doubtful it would approve such action, at this time !

The approval of a draft would certainly demoralize the enemy, but this is not a top objective of the democrats ! That was just an after thought .

I'd like to see a Draft because it will be funny to watch the rich little snots in the College Republicans wet themselves when they realise they have to shut up, grab a rifle, and go stand next to some poor bastard whose been in Iraq since the begining of this FlusterCluck, and actually get shot at.

I try not to hate anybody, but I really hate "republican" military age guys running around expensive universities with big mouths about how great the war is while the ghetto kids are actually out there.

We need a draft to even things out a bit. It will engender more resistance to what's going on, and that may just help stop it.

Not very many people ,would like this cause not all people like some believe in dieing for oil. If we went to war for a real reason and not so are president and the gas companies can still oil and raise up the gas prices. I would tell the person who wants this done to take a hike. Now if it was for a real war ,one that had a real purose than by all means do it. As for this bullshit Iraq war sorry no not very many people who are smart would even consider such a policy. As for those who like taking oil they would say yes. I feel sorry for the troops because they were forced to go to Iraq. Once you are in the service you have to go to the war. I have friends and family in the military and they are ******* ticked off, because of bushes bullshit Iraq war. There not ******* stupid and they know that they might have to go to Iraq. And the chances of them coming back aren't that good. When you still oil from a country and tell people its because that country has weapons of mass destruction , how do you think these people are going to act. There going to be pissed off and those who think we had no right going into there countrie are going to hate us and want us dead. If you are republican and believe there is such thing as weapons of mass destruction than good for you. I am not here to say republicans are wrong ,rather I am going to use my freedom of speech through my opinion, no I don't have facts nor has the president have any real proof. I just don't like being lied too and paying high gas prices. if you don't mind than great. If you can see through all these lies about weapons of mass destruction than great , your see there is more to the story. These are just my opinions and I am not here to judge. As for your question would drafting help and would people support it not going to happen, alot of people are pissed right now and have lost family and friends in the service and by a draft passing it takes away people right to chose if they wanna serve there country or not.

Volunteer armed forces is the way to go, then you have soldiers who are willing and able to fight doing the fighting. If you have a draft, you are not only going to anger the populace but you are going to have people there who are apathetic and/or outright hostile to the cause. That can't be good for morale. With a volunteer force you have people willing to lay their lives on the line for the cause. With a draft you have some people there who aren't willing to make that sacrifice.

If a cause is significant enough that we will need to significantly up the number of troops we have, people will enlist (for example, enlistment numbers jumped for WW2). If you have to resort to a draft you are fighting a war that isn't worth it.

a military draft would bring a swift end to our "adventure" in Iraq because the entire country would suddenly be involved. pressing for reinstatement of the draft would have the same effect.

I wouldn't support it but my fellow Democrat Charles Rangel has a bill on the floor to reinstate it. You can view the bill's details on his web site (see link below).
