Compare a vw and, say a citroen saxo.

The vw will have thicker metal in the bodywork, and will have had more spent on it generally. An example of this I saw, was that a new citroen did not have the underside of the bonnet painted with the final colour.

How many peugeot 205 s are left compared to Golfs? The Golf all had galvanised chassis and were designed to last.

Some old VW vans will go for more than £30 000, (not $). I bought a beetle (1967) as a shell & rebuilt it. It's probably worth around £3000.

In general, the price you will pay is what it is percieved to be worth by others.

In response to above, I've paid well over £1000 for a nice oak green 3 door mk2 16v Golf. We are all wacking in the Mk4 20vT engines in them, too. In this case, you would expect to pay around £4k to £5k. That would get you around 210+bhp

Because VW builds pretty good little cars (not ALWAYS, but most of the time).

You think the price on golfs is good.. check out the price on 20 or 30 year old Beetles, Vans, or Karmen Ghias.. nothing special about them.. they were MASS produced in the 50's 60,s and 70's.. but one of them in good running shape will cost you almost as much as it did new.. and in premium shape you can expect to pay $15k to $20k for a van..

Because vw make them, personally i wouldn't spend over a grand on an old shaped golf, some of them are h and j reged etc!! the new golfs are nice but not worth the price there asked for.

They have a long-standing reputation for quality and reliability. The older ones deserved it, later ones are no better than all the other hatchbacks on the road.

Reputations last far too long - look at Skoda for example. Many people still laugh at them, but they're superbly engineered cars nowadays, and very well put together.

Very reliable, lots of room in the trunk, peppy.

A perfect 2nd car or a young persons car.

The only drawback is that VW are notoriously expensive for service.

Fortunately they run so well that they rarely need repairs.

if you buy ford or vauxhall they will break down. vw hold their value because of their reliability. they may cost a little bit more but over the course of time you will save money

VW's hold their value as they are good cars. VW's are from german manufacturers, have good engines, and solid body work. Always a safe bet to buy any german made car.

When their value is pretty low to start off with, it can go down too much further.
