If he's not skinny and is friendly, he probably has a home. He may just be traveling around (they can have up to a 2 mile territory). I would get a flea collar (see if he is used to a collar first), and tape a note to it asking if he has an owner. And as another suggested post fliers, or put a found ad in the paper. It's possible that someone moved in the neighborhood and the cat got out, or got lost. You can also call your local animal control and see if they have any reported lost cats fitting the description.
Another way to tell is if he is still at your house after about 5 years!

there are many ways, these include-
1- check for a collar, tags or a collar mark where there used to be one
2- ask the local vet if he/she notices the cat and knows who it belongs to
3- check for burrs, ticks or if the cat is very skinny, then that means it has been in the wild for a while
4- Ask your neighbors if it's theirs and put up fliers to find it's owner
PS- Don't get too attached to it until you are sure no one owns it

post flyers, if nobody calls you to get it, take it to a shelter/vet and see if it has a microchip. if not, leave it at the shelter for some one to adopt or if you want to just keep it.
