I love your questions; they are usually very methodical.
Should we be divided like gangs? Maybe we are all actually believing in the same thing. It just goes by different names.
But then again, if we don't FREELY convert to believe the same thing, then our right to freedom of religion and what we believe in are lost. Also, if we are all united religious, others would probably just put their own spin on it, gather some followers, breakaway, and then we'd be seperated again.
So I guess even though we probably should work together, seperation is almost unavoidable becasue of the fact that we have rights to believe whatever we want and that not everyone gets along in a group.

As is the case with any large group within which people seek belonging, there are definitely some similar mentalities (mob mentality). However, the basic principles are different. In its truest and most basic forms, most religions stand for love and peace. Human behavior, however, tends to ruin all of that. Damn humans. The sole purpose of a gang is to prey on others for power. Certainly, the corrupted of the religious do this. And those bast*rds are the ones we should fry.
My boyfriend just walked up, read the question, pointed at my PC, and said simply, "Yes." And he was raised Lutheran.

Why blame religion? The problem is that we are not religious enough! All Religions teach such beautiful values of love, comapssion, caring and sharing. If we get stuck in external symbolism and ritualism and fight over it forgetting the basic tenets taught in the religion we have to introspect ourselves. Why label relgions?
No human civilisation has thrived without religion. we need to go deeper into religion so tht it becomes a unifying factor rather than becoming a divisive tool in the hands of mischief makers.

To me, the different religions are more like schools. Some people resonate well with a certain teaching method, while others fail miserably with that same method. In the same way that there are many different educational techniques, there are many religions, as well. They address different people and their varying needs.

There's probably something to the in-group/out-group mentality they both have. I would say that was more the case in pre-Enlightenment Europe.
Hmm, also, in a healthy society, neither gangs nor churches thrive.

In some occasions yes. Fanaticism and ignorants are usually
the cause. Holy wars or Crusades have killed more people
than any other wars.
Best Regards.

Yes, especially if that "gang" harms others, destroys families, wrecks communities, societies and cultures.... and especially if they disrespect the wants and needs of the individual...without any discussion or reproach
